TheData Science Institute at Vanderbilt is a new trans-institutional research andeducational center that was launched with funding from the Data Science VisionsTIPs VRA grant. The goals of the institute are to support data-intensiveresearch at Vanderbilt, launch new educational tracks in data science, andconnect to government, industry and non-profits. Organizationally, theinstitute falls under the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.
Theinaugural Data Scientists are important members of the team charged withlaunching the new trans-institutional Data Science Institute being createdunder the Office of the Provost at Vanderbilt University. These new roles arekey research positions that entail working with institute faculty andscientific staff to develop the research and teaching activities of theinstitute. In addition, positions will have some freedom to pursue their ownprojects and research interests.
We are hiring threepositions, each of which includes a different level of responsibilities andqualifications. These three positions are:
Chief Data Scientist
Senior Data Scientist
Duties and Responsibilities:
TheChief Data Scientist will report to theco-Directors of the Institute. The Chief Data Scientist is responsible forleading and staffing teams of data scientists, faculty and students for thepurpose of supporting research across Vanderbilt, engaging with Vanderbiltfaculty and researchers directly, developing and teaching training modules forthe Vanderbilt community, assisting faculty in teaching courses that are partof the new MS program in Data Science and advising MS graduate students intheir capstone research projects, and advising undergraduate students withtheir immersion projects. The Chief Data Scientist will have supervisoryresponsibility.
TheSenior Data Scientist will report to theChief Data Scientist and will primarily be responsible for: engaging withresearchers across campus to promote the research services of the institute,participating in or leading scientificteams that will help Vanderbilt researchers to maximize the potential of theirdata, exploring possible research partnerships, assisting with the teaching ofcourses in the MS program in Data Science, designing and teaching trainingmodules for the Vanderbilt community, advising MS graduate students in theircapstone research projects, and advising undergraduate students with theirimmersion projects.
TheData Scientist will report to the ChiefData Scientist and will primarily be responsible for: engaging with researchersacross campus to promote the research services of the institute, participatingin scientific teams that will help Vanderbilt researchers to maximize thepotential of their data, exploring possible research partnerships, assistingwith the teaching of courses in the MS program in Data Science, designing andteaching training modules for the Vanderbilt community, advising MS graduatestudents in their capstone research projects, and advising undergraduatestudents with their immersion projects..
Idealcandidates for all three positions will have extensive technical expertise indata science, academic or industry experience, and have excellent communicationskills. Data Scientists of all seniority levels are encouraged to apply andwill be considered.
Profile of an IdealCandidate:
MS degree required for the Data Scientist position. PhD degree required for the Chief and Senior level positions.
Experience performing research in industry or an academic environment is required.
Experience with working in teams in the data science industry is preferred.
Experience with working in or managing (depending on seniority level) teams is preferred.
Well-rounded skills in data science: computer programming (e.g., Python, R), data structures (e.g., SQL), statistics (e.g., Bayesian modelling), data visualization, are required.
Ability to problem solve, debug, and troubleshoot while under pressure and time constraints is required.
Ability to communicate effectively about technical topics to both experts and non-experts is required.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are preferred.
