Executive Director, Workers' Rights Institute - Georgetown University Law Center
Georgetown Law's Centers and Institutes play an important role in shaping public policy and debate through lectures, conferences, and symposia; policy analyses; and other programs and projects. Overseen by the Associate Dean of Clinics, Centers, and Institutes, and an Assistant Dean of Centers and Institutes, the Centers and Institutes are supported by a small, shared administrative staff. A new Workers' Rights Institute has joined this group to promote Georgetown's Jesuit mission, commitment to justice and the common good, and support for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society.
The Executive Director of the Workers' Rights Institute develops and oversees programs and projects; identifies funding sources that will sustain the Institute for the long term; and works to conceptualize, seek funding for, and implement inaugural projects of this new entity. S/he identifies ways to support programming related to workers' rights, as well as funding sources for these new endeavors; designs a staffing structure to support such work; and manages the day-to-day functions of the institute. The Executive Director has duties that include but are not limited to:
Conceptualizes high-impact, non-partisan conferences, lectures, symposia and other events that bring together workers' rights groups, government decision makers, and others.
Plans such events by identifying and inviting speakers, designing and moderating discussions, ensuring participation and attendance by relevant actors, and overseeing event logistics.
Ensures relevant follow up to maximize the impact of such events.
Develops projects - potentially including research papers, policy analyses, blogs and more - that further workers' rights.
Oversees such projects and ensures they are of the highest quality.
Promotes and publicizes the work of the Institute to ensure it reaches the widest possible audience.
Develops, proposes, and teaches one or more courses at Georgetown Law that focuses on workers' rights, for example, an experiential course like a practicum or a more traditional seminar, or identifying and facilitating placements for Law Center externs at workers' rights organizations.
Identifies and develops fundable projects to be undertaken by the Workers' Rights Institute and the staff structure needed to carry out this work.
In partnership with Georgetown Law Advancement, seeks individual and foundation support for such work.
Ensures compliance with all funding agreements.
Tracks the Institute's budget and financial expenditures.
Hires and manage any Institute staff.
Serve as Institute leader, as required, throughout the Law Center community.
Juris Doctorate degree
7 years of relevant professional experience
Deep knowledge of, and connections within, the workers' rights community
Preference for experience with project management, policy analysis, fundraising, and teaching
