Berkeley Lab's Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Earth Staff Scientist. The Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is seeking an outstanding scientist to develop and lead the electromagnetic (EM) geophysical programs in carbon capture and storage, geothermal and fossil energy resource development, and in groundwater management. The candidate must be technically broad, with a solid scientific background and experience in an applied research environment. We seek individuals with previous experience in electromagnetic geophysics, both numerical and field and one comfortable with leading and/or contributing to multidisciplinary programs.
The LBNL geophysics program is multifaceted, including technology and instrumentation development, field data acquisition, processing and interpretation, and the development and application of numerical codes. The program also features joint technology development with fluid flow and seismic and potential field methods. Specific areas of existing strength in the LBNL program include borehole EM measurements and HPC inversion techniques; however, areas of interest also include CSEM and airborne EM acquisition/inversion. The position will include significant proposal development, with initiatives primarily directed at the Department of Energy, program management, and project execution. In addition to reporting to internal and external stakeholders, the job will also require frequent technical publication and presentation at conferences and other public forums. While the position is considered mid-career, exceptional early career scientists will be considered; this position will be hired at a level commensurate with the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
What You Will Do:
Independently lead a nationally recognized program in the areas of EM geophysics.
Independently design a research agenda, conceptualize and conceive of research designs, develop detailed research plans, perform innovative and complex research and analysis, and synthesize results.
Supervise, direct, and lead internal LBNL staff, and technical subcontractors, on projects related to geothermal and fossil energy, carbon storage, nuclear waste storage, and groundwater management issues.
Collaborate with staff scientists in the Earth and Environmental Science Area as well as with colleagues from other institutions. Collaborate in multi-disciplinary teams, for example with seismologists, hydrologists, and geochemists.
Assist in developing programmatic goals for EM geophysics applied to areas of DOE interest.
Write LBNL reports, conference papers, and articles for refereed archival journals. Publish as primary or corresponding author in refereed journals, and present work extensively at conferences and workshops.
Independently raise funds for geophysical research at LBNL.
Interact with clients (DOE and industry) and with professional colleagues through participation in meetings, advisory committees, and other forms of job-related communications.
Substantial and independent interaction with funding agencies required, including writing proposals to fund research. Build and maintain effective relationships with clients.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Assist in preparing reports and giving briefings as needed in support of Earth & Environmental Science Area programs.
Mentor junior scientists and post-docs.
What is Required:
Demonstrated technical and managerial expertise in independently conceiving and designing research plans, performing data analysis, and presenting results into scientific forums, including archival refereed publications.
Ability and demonstrated experience in developing and managing high-impact projects and in developing complex and innovative new methods, tools, and approaches in EM geophysics.
Demonstrated ability to serve in advisory roles to government agencies, industry groups, and other stakeholders.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write reports, conference papers, and refereed journal articles synthesizing research results, and to present research findings in conferences, workshops, and other forums.
Demonstrated ability to work with clients and professional colleagues, manage research projects, prepare funding proposals, and independently attract research funding.
PhD or equivalent experience in applied geophysics, or a related engineering field, and at least five years of relevant professional experience.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Deep expertise in one or more of the following topics: borehole/crosswell EM acquisition/processing, HPC EM inversion approaches, novel EM sensing approaches, airborne EM acquisition/inversion.
