Reporting to the Retirement Planning and Benefits Manager, this position is responsible for processing and providing guidance on a broad range of university and state employee benefits to include: processing employee leave transactions; providing consultation to employees regarding retirement planning; processing of health insurance and flexible spending accounts; and conducting presentations to constituency groups regarding benefits. This position is responsible for and/or assists with managing and processing a broad range of ancillary benefits programs to include Worker's Compensation, short/long term disability programs, FMLA, CommonHealth, and other related employee benefits. This position is also responsible for administering leave policies and procedures and entering necessary leave and benefits information within applicable HR information systems.
Experience with employee benefits administration and HR information systems. Working knowledge of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Ability to make independent decisions and recommendations to resolve issues; strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and communication skills; and ability to work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds on all levels of the organization. Strong computer and software skills to include experience with word processing, spreadsheets, email, and automated databases. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining attention to detail and prioritizing work. Strong customer service experience. Ability to independently interpret and follow rules, regulations, instructions and guidelines.
Considerable experience interpreting and applying agency, state, and federal policies and procedures applicable to employee benefits administration. Working knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia employee leave policies. Experience presenting to diverse groups of people. Experience with Banner, PMIS, BES and related software; working knowledge of PeopleAdmin desirable. Relevant experience in higher education or state government and HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP) desirable.
