UM-Dearborn, with an enrollment of just under 9,400 undergraduate and graduate students, is an inclusive, welcoming, student-focused institution distinguished by its commitment to excellence to teaching, learning, consequential research and scholarship, as well as access, affordability and metropolitan impact. Reporting to the provost, the vice provost will work with the university’s chancellor, provost and a dynamic, talented senior leadership team to develop and implement an integrated and robust enrollment strategy positioning the university for long-term growth and future success.
Founded on more than 200 acres of the original Henry Ford Estate, UM-Dearborn has four colleges: Arts, Sciences, and Letters; Business; Education, Health, and Human Services; and Engineering and Computer Science. Its highly-academically qualified and diverse students hail from 80 birth countries. Approximately 40 percent of UM-Dearborn students transfer from other institutions, and approximately 600 students live near campus in a privately-owned apartment facility. The university leases space inside the apartment facility for student-life activities and office space. The distinction of the Carnegie Community Engagement classification – earned by only 361 campuses nationwide – recognizes the university’s commitment to embed itself within the Dearborn/Detroit metropolitan region through teaching, learning, research and engagement that makes a difference. In all, UM-Dearborn has over 55,000 alumni, 80 percent of whom reside in Michigan. Students at UM-Dearborn enjoy the advantages of an intimate campus environment (95 percent of classes have less than 50 students) with the power of the University of Michigan brand. Students also benefit from strong, local private/public partnerships that often lead to opportunities for internship experience and career placement upon graduation. The vice provost will lead a talented team of enrollment management staff that includes undergraduate admissions, financial aid and scholarships, registration, records, and other enrollment-related services. With the full support of the provost and the chancellor, the vice provost will be charged with elevating an integrated and robust enrollment function aimed at strategically positioning UM-Dearborn for long-term growth and future success. The vice provost will immediately begin work designing and executing a comprehensive, strategic enrollment management plan to complement the university's larger strategic planning effort, providing bold, creative enrollment strategies while also bringing superior leadership execution as well as organizational and change management skills, to the enrollment management agenda. UM-Dearborn takes particular pride in the socio-economic, religious and racial diversity of its student body, and the new leader will be committed to recruiting an inclusive student body and fostering a community that celebrates diversity.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to utilize technology and systems thinking to enhance campus operations as well as the strategic use of data to understand and promote the university’s strengths and to realize its goals. The role requires strong strategic, financial and change management experience coupled with comprehensive knowledge of the challenges facing higher education and deep expertise in enrollment management, including financial aid leveraging strategies. The vice provost will be a dynamic leader and proven collaborator who can inspire and motivate a team while developing and implementing forward-looking and innovative enrollment strategies that attract a dynamic and diverse student population aligned with the university’s mission. The candidate will support the enhancement of retention and graduation strategies. Enthusiasm, drive and creativity are necessary attributes.
