Job Requisition Number: 26060. The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) is an Instruction and Research unit within the College of Letters and Science. The department was formed as a result of the reorganization of the biological sciences at UCB. Integrative Biology offers 150 lower and upper division and graduate courses. The departments teaching and research activities focus on both the integration and diversity of structure and function in and among living systems, encompassing a full spectrum of biological organization (i.e. from molecular to biosphere) for organisms ranging from viruses to plants and animals.
The department has >30 regular faculty, several adjunct faculty, many emeriti faculty, and graduate students, 32 administrative and technical support staff, and numerous visiting scholars, and other researchers including undergraduate apprentices.
This specific position is in the Brooks, Exercise Physiology Laboratory, but with a strong link to the laboratory of Prof. Jose Vazquez-Medina who is a co-investigator on the NIH sponsored research effort. Hence, the successful candidate will be expected to work between labs with and among lab members.
•Tasks include: animal handling, care and husbandry (basic mouse and rat procedures: intravenous, intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injection, gavage, anesthesia, genotyping), cell culture established cell lines as well as including primary cell isolation, basic tissue culture, transfection and analysis of cell phenotype, exercise testing and training or rodents, euthanasia, tissue sampling, tissue fragmentation for organelle isolation, cell and mitochondrial isolation and respiration using Clark electrode, Oroboros and Seahorse systems, ROS detection and quantitation, histochemical analyses, identification of regulatory proteins and genes by RT-qPCR, Western and Northern blotting, ELISA, and microscopy, and doing or working with others using mass spectrometry RNAseq. Conduct cell culture studies, tissue harvesting and biochemical and molecular analyses.
•Laboratory management including equipment maintenance, ordering of supplies and maintenance of stock laboratory materials.
•Assist in care and feeding of laboratory animals. Work with the PI, post-doctoral and graduate and undergraduate student researchers as necessary to insure adequate animal care for their experiments.
•Assist in data processing, graphical representation and manuscript preparation.
•Responsibility for compliance with EH&S, ACUC and OLAC requirements in the laboratory. Work with other Laboratory SRAs, graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists to make a cohesive, functioning and happy workplace.•The employee will be required to make informed decisions that require considerations of various criteria including prior experience and discussion with the supervisor. The research, experimental design, previous and recently obtained results, personnel involved, consideration of the personal feelings and well-being of laboratory members will have to be considered when making these decisions.
•Education/Training: AB, or AB and MS degree in a relevant field with several years relevant research experience in academic or industrial settings or a combination of equivalent experience/training.
