Eastern Oregon University (EOU) seeks nominations, applications, and expressions of interest for the position of Dean of the College of Business.
The position of Dean is a full-time, 12-month, position and reports directly to the Provost and Sr. Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The University seeks an experienced, inspired and inspiring leader attuned to the quality of working relationships and productive teamwork to serve as Dean of the College of Business.
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and is responsible for fostering a work environment of academic excellence and student success, superior productivity and work quality, possessing exemplary abilities to maximize the performance of diverse faculty talent.
The Dean oversees the disciplinary areas of Business, consisting of five undergraduate degree programs in Business Administration, Economics, and Accounting (in progress), Fire Services Administration, Emergency Medical Services Administration, Military Science, and a graduate MBA program. The Dean manages programs on campus, online and at regional sites including Business, Economics, and the graduate MBA program.
The Dean formulates and implements strategy using broad business and academic knowledge to collaboratively design and effectively implement a course of action for achieving the College’s vision that includes faculty and staff professional development, program enhancement, new program development, steady campus and online enrollment growth, and entrepreneurial outreach into multiple regional markets in service to student experiential learning and industry human resources needs.
The Dean is the College leader achieving outstanding results through the effective use of capital, processes, and human capabilities. Fostering and maintaining effective working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and groups coupled with a refined entrepreneurial and durable penchant for team action and results are the expertise necessary for success.
The Dean of the College of Business position is vacant as the result of restructuring EOU’s current Colleges of Business and Education unit into two college units each with distinct leadership, budget, and strategic pathways. The new College of Business provides exciting and unique leadership opportunities for a modern, transformational administrative higher education leader with a passion for inspiring faculty and students and achieving results.

In early 2018, Eastern Oregon University was officially designated as Oregon’s Rural University! Eastern Oregon University has been serving rural Oregon since its founding as a teacher’s college in 1929 and continues to be the regional residential and online institution focal point for citizens of all ages in establishing and enabling higher education in the rural communities throughout the Pacific NW. Located in La Grande, Oregon, EOU presents a gorgeous campus situated at the base of the picturesque Blue Mountains in the historic Grande Ronde Valley.
EOU combines a strong emphasis on access and quality and offers excellent educational opportunities for residents of rural communities dispersed over the large geographical region of Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Idaho, and beyond. With a student body of nearly 3,000 students, about 1,400 students attend classes at the main campus in La Grande.
EOU was an early adopter of distance and online education and has been highly successful in delivering higher education to the many rural communities throughout the region, state, and country. Over half of all students matriculate beyond the boundaries of campus through its distance and online education courses. The Leadership Role of the Dean of the College of Business
EOU is seeking a Dean of the College of Business with a breadth of knowledge, experience, and competence as an academic administrator. The Dean will have ambitious goals for growth that align with EOU’s Ascent strategic plan that extends to the University’s 100th anniversary in 2029. Strong communication, team building, collaborative decision-making, and strategic implementation skills that foster superior instruction, productivity, learning environment, and work quality are all vital.
Professional Qualifications and Competencies
The core competencies required for this position are the following:

The Dean of the College of Business must be a leader in the University community and beyond with a commitment and passion for higher education in a rural setting and possess demonstrated experience, knowledge, vision, and interpersonal skills to lead a complex institution of higher education. The Dean must be able to lead the College in new and strategic directions that enable continuing fulfillment of the University’s mission and goals.
The professional character of the Dean must encompass integrity, mutual respect, broad inclusiveness, understanding of the fundamental values of diversity, and passion for serving the higher education needs of EOU’s current and future student body.
The position requires an action-oriented, proactive problem-solver that thrives on achieving tangible results. Collaborative decision making expertise, facilitative leadership, and conscientious follow-through with people are vital skills of the Dean necessary for the fulfillment of the College of Business mission and purpose.
Ph.D. or equivalent terminal credential in a field of business or economics from an accredited institution of higher education.
Must be faculty qualified under IACBE Accreditation Standards.
Five+ years of successful experience leading a strong business-oriented, entrepreneurial, and outcomes-based unit in an administrative leadership role highlighted by major contributions to achieving established program goals, faculty development, student learning benchmarks, and strategic resource allocation.
Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check.
Valid work authorization documents required.
7-10 years of progressive leadership in a strong business-oriented, entrepreneurial, and outcomes-based college in an accredited higher education institution.
Experience with online instructor selection, oversight, and evaluation; course scheduling; and advising and supervision of advisor’s expanded roles.
Experience working with business and/or community leaders to establish effective partnerships and outcomes.
Demonstrated civic engagement and community involvement.
Existing scholarly record and support for various forms of scholarship.
