MyDay is a complex, multi-year program designed to improve WashU’s operational excellence and ability to make insight-driven decisions. MyDay is a once-in-a-generation program to replace the university’s core administrative IT systems (human resource, finance and student) and improve associated business processes. The five-year effort will replace these systems with a single system (Workday) that will integrate all of our key administrative data in the cloud.�
The Data Architect Lead applies industry expertise in evaluating the University’s Data Architecture practice and identifies key improvements necessary to accomplish the goals of the Data Architecture Team. The position is responsible for developing and refining data architecture standards and applying best practices to support the University’s overarching Data Strategy. A successful candidate proactively investigates new trends, patterns and practices in the industry to improve overall Data Architecture capabilities and serves as a mentor and coach for team members and junior staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the development of a data architecture strategy that supports the organizational needs both tactically and strategically.
Articulate and demonstrate the value of data architecture and new solutions to organizational imperatives.
Set the direction for data architecture and lead platform discussions.
Participate in and/or facilitate component selection for the overall data roadmap and direction.
Collaborate with university stakeholders and architects to implement strategic initiatives.
Provide strategic recommendations to maximize the value of the organization’s data assets and ecosystem.
Maintain current knowledge of organizational strategies.
Data Architecture and Design
Help drive the development and deployment of the enterprise data and analytics strategy and platform.
Ensure data solutions are architected appropriately for availability, security, accessibility and scalability.
Provide technical guidance for designing sustainable, high performance data gathering and processing architectures.
Ensure that technical and business requirements drive data architecture decisions.
Develop the methodology for designing data warehouse and lake/repository data structures.
Work with architects to conform dimensional data as necessary to integrate data from multiple systems.
Develop the methodology for designing canonical data views.
Provide technical guidance for design and implementation of data governance systems and policy.
Maintain knowledge of the data ecosystem.
Develop database schema design methodology and practice.
Ensure that data designs and structures are sufficiently documented.
Maintain a good understanding of the semantic layer.
Standards and Oversight
Lead the development and implementation of data architecture standards.
Accountable for data designs that adhere to established standards.
Ensure that data designs can be effectively implemented, managed and efficiently operated.
Define standards for data modeling, naming, governing and delivery.
Recommend standards for data access, data quality and master data management.
Work closely with architects and developers to ensure database objects adhere to established standards.
Oversee disciplined delivery methods and practices to ensure all assigned activities are completed accurately and within aligned guidelines.
Maintain data security best practices.
Perform design reviews for additions and modifications to the data.
Provide expertise to Data Governance.
Leadership and Mentoring
Serve as expert on university data models, structures and ecosystem.
Communicate benefits of enterprise data architecture to university stakeholders with a focus on meeting organizational needs.
Assist developers in the use of data architecture designs.
Mentor the team in architecture, data modeling and ETL best practices.
Facilitate or lead subject/team meetings.
Mentor and coach architects, team members and junior staff.
Provide inputs to training plans.
Participate in and/or facilitate interviewing of candidates for data architecture positions.
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as computer science, information systems, engineering or a related field, plus 6 years of experience in data architecture
Demonstrated progressive experience architecting data solutions with focus on enterprise applications or data warehouse, data lake, or analytical environments
Graduate degree in information management, management of information systems, computer science, engineering,� or a related field
Experience working in a higher education research university
Experience with or training in a formal data architecture methodology: DAMA, TDWI, etc.
Experience with data modeling techniques in a variety of paradigms: Kimball, Inmon, Hadoop, etc.
Working knowledge of canonical data models
Experience with cloud development platforms, such as Azure, Amazon AWS, etc.
Experience with an application development methodology as it relates to data architecture
Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new circumstances
Excellent written, presentation and oral communication skills
Knowledge of enterprise and line-of business applications and application lifecycle
Ability to effectively communicate technical issues
Flexible and willing to work extended hours as necessary and recognize the need to do so
Ability to establish measurable goals and objectives for staff

Applicant Special Instructions:
This work is normally performed in the Washington University offices located at North Campus, West Campus and/or the Med School Campus offices. There will be some activities that require trips to other University offices and offsite locations.
The hiring range for this position is $88,920 - $117,790 annually.
