Salary Range: Salary commensurate with background and experience of the individual selected. The role of the University Development and Alumni Engagement Division is to foster strong relationships with internal and external partners to enhance support for Cal Poly. University Development and Alumni Engagement establishes and implements an overall advancement program, including coordinating fundraising, donor relations, gift processing, trust and endowment management, training and systems support for the donor database, and Cal Poly Foundation support and administration.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Individual Giving, the Director of Parent Philanthropy will assume overall management responsibility for strategically creating and implementing plans to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward parent leadership gifts from prospects and donors. The Director of Parent Philanthropy will generate unrestricted and discretionary philanthropic support for university priorities and will establish strategies for increasing private support from parents for the university. The incumbent is expected to travel extensively, with required day and overnight travel.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
A Bachelor's Degree and four years of progressively responsible professional experience in development or advancement, sales, fundraising or a related field. Possession of a valid driver's license or ability obtain by date of hire.
Knowledge of all phases of fundraising including principal gifts, annual and major gifts, constituency-based fundraising, planned giving and regional fundraising programs.
Demonstrated experience in fundraising, donor relations, marketing, planned giving or another related professional field.
Ability to initiate a program or project and carry it to completion and be able to handle many details in a well-organized and focused manner. Ability to interact and communicate successfully with staff.
Thorough knowledge and demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic plans.
Demonstrated competence in designing, planning, and managing successful comprehensive fundraising plans.
Successful management style characterized by a commitment to collaboration and creativity. Recognized as an effective advocate who exhibits high ethical standards of conduct and confidentiality in dealing with various internal and external constituencies.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn recruiting and managing volunteer/advisory boards.
Strong supervisory and mentoring skills.
Ability and willingness to travel, including experience staffing a President or other senior administrators in the cultivation and solicitation of philanthropic gifts.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals at all levels on and off campus.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing; thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Ability to interpret, communicate, and apply policies and procedures.

Familiarity with or the ability to quickly learn collective bargaining agreements and administration of the appropriate corrective action methods, as appropriate, in a highly unionized environment.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures
Experience in a University comprehensive campaign.
Fundraising experience with a proven track record of working with parent giving donors and closing gifts.
Demonstrated success within a comprehensive University-based advancement program in an academic setting that balances centralized and decentralized fundraising operations.
Demonstrated skills in an educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-oriented attitude.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
