The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, (the Campaign) a leader in the fight to reduce tobacco use and its devastating consequences in the United States and around the world, is seeking a dynamic, talented Executive Vice President to oversee its U.S. advocacy programs. The Campaign is the largest non-profit advocacy organization devoted to changing public attitudes and public policies related to tobacco in order to prevent kids from using tobacco, help smokers quit, and protect everyone from secondhand smoke.
This is a unique opportunity for a passionate, savvy and experienced advocate and executive to play a pivotal role in improving public health in the U.S. and internationally. Over the last twenty years enormous progress has been made in reducing tobacco use in the United States. The efforts to reduce tobacco use are often cited as one of the best examples of the power of effective advocacy to bring about meaningful change, but much remains to be done and the work going forward has the potential to make an extraordinary difference, especially in reducing health disparities and health inequities in the United States.
The Executive Vice President (EVP), U.S. Programs, is responsible for the formulation, supervision and management of the Campaign’s U.S. programs, staff and budget, including the Campaign’s advocacy at the federal, state and local level and the Campaign’s U.S.-focused research, communications, development and youth advocacy work.
The EVP is responsible for ensuring that the policies and programs of the Campaign’s U.S. activities support the Campaign’s mission and policies, that the Campaign meets its goals and objectives in a timely manner and that the different units and teams overseen by the EVP work cooperatively and effectively with each other and with all other components of the Campaign.
The EVP reports directly to the President and is a member of the Campaign’s Executive Committee.
Management and supervision of the Campaign’s U.S. staff including ensuring coordination between teams, including communications, research, federal, state, youth advocacy, and legal staff;
Formulation and implementation of the Campaign’s U.S. programs;
Develop and oversee the implementation of strategic plans and organizational priorities for the Campaign’s U.S. activities;
Provide leadership for the formulation of U.S. policy positions, goals, objectives, and strategies on issues relating to tobacco control, including those relating to health equity;
Help maintain and build upon the Campaign’s reputation as a leader and good partner in tobacco control;
Develop and monitor the Campaign’s U.S. budget, working with staff to ensure that resources and strategic priorities are aligned;
Work closely with the Campaign’s global programs to coordinate policy positions and activities between the Campaign’s U.S. and global programs;
Serve as representative of and spokesperson for the Campaign;
Establish and maintain good working relations with NGOs and others involved in tobacco control;
As part of senior management of the Campaign, assist in fundraising efforts, including developing and building relationships with donors, political leaders and the media;
Continue to build and support a cohesive, dedicated, diverse and highly effective staff; and
Carry out all responsibilities in close coordination with the President and carry out such other duties as assigned by the President.
At least 10 years in a senior leadership role within a substantial advocacy organization, government agency or for-profit corporation, with at least 5 years of experience in a senior management role;
Exceptional strategic thinking ability and demonstrated success in planning and implementing programs;
Knowledge of major legislative issues and related political landscape;
Strong skills and experience in fundraising;
Proven financial, organizational, and personnel management skills;
Strong analytical and decision-making skills;
Understanding of evolving communications and information technologies;
Experience in policy work and/or issue campaigns and/or tobacco control issues;
Experience and success in building and supporting a diverse highly professional staff, teambuilding and consensus building;
Strong written and oral communications skills;
Ability to work under tight time constraints; and
Capitol Hill or Administration experience is a plus
