Assistant Director of Student Experience INTO Hofstra University
INTO University Partnerships collaborates with leading universities to provide international students with a personalized and highly supportive learning environment in which to acclimatize to life on a US university campus and prepare for long-term academic success. Since 2006, INTO has launched partnerships to internationalize universities in the US, UK and Asia. Universities in the US include: Oregon State University, University of South Florida, Colorado State University, Marshall University, Drew University, George Mason University, Saint Louis University, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Washington State University, Suffolk University, Illinois State University and Hofstra University.
The Assistant Director of Student Experience will report to the Executive Director for INTO Hofstra University.
The Assistant Director of Student Experience is directly responsible for developing and maintaining a positive student experience for all students in the INTO Center. This includes responsibility for all the non-academic student programs and services areas of the partnership including, but not limited to the following: housing and dining, health and wellness, transportation, activities/programming, arrival, orientation and transition programs and services, student success initiatives and partnerships with academic programs and other university resources, as well as communication with parents, families, sponsors, and educational agents.
The Assistant Director of Student Experience, as part of the INTO partnership administrative leadership team, will develop processes and systems throughout the Center. This includes making decisions regarding the establishment of the Center and the student services department and working directly with key administrators at the University in these areas. In addition, the position will work closely with INTO recruitment managers and directors throughout the world, the INTO Application Processing Center in San Diego and colleagues at other INTO partner universities. This position will also require close cooperation and interaction with the University office of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director of Student Experience will be responsible for making decisions involving interpretation of university policies as they relate to student life. These decisions will be made in conjunction with the partnership management team, the office of student affairs, international student services, and other relevant university departments.
Key accountabilities and duties
The responsibilities of this position may change and develop over time, but will include the following:
Ensure overall student experience meets the vision and mission of the partnership.
Align areas of responsibility with the broader institutional vision of campus internationalization.
As a member of the partnership senior management team, develop strategic priorities to further the goals of the Center, and ultimately enable the progression of well-prepared international students to the University as fully-admitted undergraduate and graduate students.
Oversee the following areas of the student experience for INTO partnership students: on-campus housing and dining, arrivals and airport transfer, crisis management, student conduct, engagement, orientation, and supervision of the INTO center welcome desk.
Develop policies, processes and systems needed to manage student life areas throughout the Center and oversee the management and implementation of the above.
Act as the point of contact and in collaboration with university student affairs departments in all matters relating to or involving students studying in an INTO partnership program.
Develop strategies for the integration of students in existing student affairs services and programs; work with the university to ensure a positive experience for all students.
Consult as necessary with the university crisis response team, legal counsel, or outside agencies in emergency matters involving INTO partnership students.
Oversee all print publications pertaining to the student experience including, but not limited to, the Welcome Guide and the Student Handbook.
Work closely with the partnership finance team on all financial processes and procedures in the student experience arena and manage the unit within the agreed budget.
Lead and manage a team which will include partnership employees and university employees to encourage best practices in the student experience, as well as retention of staff and students.
Establish and maintain good working relationships with partner universities, peers and colleagues within the INTO network of partners and regional offices worldwide. Provide appropriate documentation, service and advice to new INTO North America partners and act as a resource for the establishment of the student experience at new centers as needed.
Participate as needed in hosting events for education counselors and INTO staff such as “familiarization” tours of the university.
Assess programs, arrival and orientation, on-campus residence and dining experiences, and other elements of the student experience, and use assessment results toward continuous improvement in delivering student services
Provide timely and accurate information and reporting as required by the Executive Director, INTO North America, the University and the advisory board.

This position is based at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY.

Five or more years’ professional work experience in Student Affairs in Higher Education in a leadership role (assistant, associate, or director)
Experience planning, developing and implementing programs and activities for international students
Commitment to the strategic internationalization goals of the university
Previous work with international students or experience living or studying abroad
Experience with building and managing relationships with peers, senior managers, key stakeholders, parents and students from a range of cultural backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a team in a fast-paced dynamic environment
Excellent leadership and communication skills
Eligibility to work in and travel freely to and from the U.S.
Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, work under pressure and, when necessary, with minimal resources
Advanced degree in student affairs, higher education or related field
Budget management experience
Experience working with student affairs programs
Understanding of issues relevant to international students
Familiarity with strategies on proactive risk management, emergency response, and crisis intervention
Experience in a start-up or transitioning environment
Proficiency in second language other than English
Skills and abilities:
Demonstrated ability to handle difficult or sensitive situations
Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, work under pressure and when necessary, with minimal resources
Strong analytical and decision making skills
