City of Suffolk is in search of our next key member of the City Manager’s Executive Leadership Team with responsibility for planning, directing, managing, and supervising the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department. Operating within broad general policy guidelines and in alignment with the City Manager, the Director of Public Works exercises substantial latitude and discretion to achieve effective and efficient utilization of resources to manage the department. This position is appointed by and serves under the direction of the City Manager and requires frequent interaction with other department directors.
As one of the City’s largest departments, Public Works is organized into eight divisions (Administration; Stormwater/Engineering; Mosquito Control; Fleet Management; Refuse; Roadways; Traffic Engineering; and Transit) including 240 staff members, a $58 million operating budget, and a Capital Improvement Project (CIP) budget of $28 million.
Our ideal candidate will have graduated from a four-year college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, civil engineering, urban and regional planning, or a related field, and at least 6 to 9 years of progressively responsible experience in municipal engineering program administration, including 6 to 9 years of responsible supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. The position also requires a Professional Engineer License and a valid driver’s license.
