Summary The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) is a nonprofit organization and is one of the only National Olympic Committees in the world that does not receive government funding for its Olympic programs, instead relying on the generosity of a committed community of sponsors and donors. Increasing philanthropic support for U.S. athletes is one of the USOC’s highest strategic priorities. The Director, Major Gifts is an employee of the USOC’s Development Division, and as such, also works for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation (USOPF), the organization charged with raising philanthropic support for the USOC and Team USA. The Director, Major Gifts (Director) is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and is responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects (individuals, foundations) and participating in donor stewardship activities. Reporting to the Senior Director, Major Gifts (Western Region), the Director manages a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects who are capable of making a gift of $100,000+. Targeted prospects are in the San Francisco Bay Area, with others located in cities in the West and Pacific Northwest. Some prospects and donors may have a demonstrated interest in the Olympic and Paralympic movements and an established giving history to the USOPF, while others will have to be discovered and/or developed. Duties & Responsibilities - Successfully manage a major gift portfolio of approximately 100 prospects to meet agreed-upon philanthropic goals for the region. Engage in the proper activities that focus on donor-centered philanthropy to maximize potential gifts over the long-term. Ensure that all activities are entered in the division’s constituent database to guarantee the quality of communication and donor records.
- With support provided by Prospect Development staff, identify major gift prospects capable of making significant charitable gifts to the USOPF. Cultivate identified prospects via in-person visits, telephone and email communication, and engagement opportunities such as special events.
- Solicit prospects for significant charitable gifts to support the USOPF and the vision and mission of the USOC. Steward donors via a variety of communications and experiences, including attendance at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- Engage a network of volunteers to achieve regional and programmatic goals. Work with USOPF board members and trustees to effectively assist efforts in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects.

Demonstrate accountability and transparency that is consistent with U.S. Olympic Committee’s expectations as a steward of the Olympic and Paralympic movements. -
Serve as a key fundraising contact for the region; coordinate and implement special projects at the direction of the Senior Director and perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required Education: - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Advanced degree preferred
Experience: - 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation and ability to manage many activities simultaneously.
- Strong preference for an individual with experience working in a development officer role in the San Francisco Bay Area who has a keen understanding of the philanthropic culture of San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Ability to leverage existing contacts to help build a new portfolio of prospects.
- Proven ability to translate complex organizational funding needs into compelling gift proposals.
- Experience in collaborating successfully in a team environment.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring and working with volunteers and senior leadership within an organization. Ability to work effectively with top executives and community leaders.
- Evidence of being adaptable to working with changing priorities.
- Professional experience working in a sophisticated development organization is preferred.
- Experience in an athletic environment a plus.
