This position will organize, assist, direct and perform construction work on-site required to serve member villages with electrical energy through a diesel generation and distribution system. Instruct power plant operators during the operations and maintenance period in use of equipment, methods and safe practices involved in construction. Correct operational problems and perform maintenance and repair on the distribution system and power plants. Maintain good relations with the village council and member-owners and build their understanding and confidence in AVEC’s value, mission and goals.
Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
Experience: 2+ Years of Diesel and Electrical experience Areas of Experience: Diesel and electrical related field and utility experience; preferred. Must be familiar with and typical tools and test equipment common to the trade. Experience and capable of using discretionary decision making and sole charge of independent actions.
Technical Education (Diesel) – 6,000 hour minimum organized journeyman course and diesel mechanics or equivalent military or commercial schooling with recognized journeyman status equivalent; total education and experience equivalent to meet diesel requirement of 6,000 hours; preferred Familiar with at least three (3) major diesel engine manufacturer products, at least one of which is Cummins, Detroit diesel or Caterpillar. Demonstrate the ability to disassemble, completely overhaul to factory tolerances and reinstall external and internal diesel engine components and accessories, such as head assemblies, turbocharges, oil pumps, injectors, water pumps, blowers, etc. Demonstrate the ability to perform complex troubleshooting and repair reoccurring trouble on diesel engines from 25 to 1,000 hp, including complete rebuild from a burnout or frozen condition, with catastrophic component failure. Be familiar with the requirements and need for good preventive maintenance on diesel electric sets. Perform preventive maintenance and make complex modifications in accordance with manufacturer's and engineering recommendations. Two (2) years of full time work experience in the diesel mechanic field to substitute for the equivalent of 6,000 hour journeyman. Familiarity with types of fuel oils and lubricants used in small to medium sized diesel engines. The ability to perform quality arc and acetylene welding. Technical Education (Electrical) – Formal training in the theory of electricity with appropriate completed certificate, plus six (6) months of practical experience; or attend an 18 week commercial or military electrical power generating Plant Operator course with appropriate completed certificate, plus two (2) years practical experience; or one (1) year experience working in regular contact with electrical generators, regulating equipment and distribution systems and completion of not less than two of the following correspondence or vocational courses with appropriate completed certificates:
-Basic Electricity -Electric Transmissions & Distribution -Electrical Wiring -Schematic and Wiring Diagram Reading -Generator and Motor Theory
Demonstrate the ability to perform troubleshooting and repair, either electrical or mechanical problems, on single or double bearing electrical generators from 75 to 750 KW. Knowledge of how to:
Perform pre-operational inspection of generator set and system.
The ability to adjust protective relays and circuit breakers to meet system requirements.
Accomplish parallel operation with load and correct cause of motorized or cross current conditions with up to three generator sets.
Apply quality control techniques to check own work and work of others.
