The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is currently recruiting for a Genomic Sequencing Platform Specialist . The Genomic Sequencing Platform Specialist will provide high level technical expertise in the operations of a laboratory performing genomic sequencing processes utilizing high-throughput genomic sequencing platforms. The Specialist will be expected to oversee laboratory research activities.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various next generational sequencing technologies.
Independently process high-throughput genomic sequencing platforms.
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies necessary for next-gen library preparations and sequencing.
Develop and implement new protocols, methods and applications for quality control of DNA or RNA samples, library preparations and/or sequencing.
Meet with directors and PI's to discuss sequencing utilization.
Regularly reports sequencing platform performance and schedules to the Laboratory Manager and Core Directors.
Routinely assist in writing and updating standard operating procedures that govern all aspects of quality checking of samples, library preparation and sequencing on various platforms.
Train new personnel on Core Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on sample quality assessments, next-gen library preps for multiple sequencing platforms and sequencing on the latest sequencing platforms.
Perform laboratory research activities such as: recombinant DNA techniques, cultures and specimens; development of new protocols needed for library preparations and sequencing technology to optimize Core services.
Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelors in Biology, Chemistry or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years in laboratory research including two (2) years of relevant research specialization with a combination of experience that may involve NextGen Sequencing and use of laboratory automation equipment including liquid handling systems, sequencing using Illumina, PacBio or Nanopore platforms, and/or experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Molecular biology skills including DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, electrophoresis, cloning etc.
Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and Principle Investigators.
Ability to operate in a high-throughput sequencing facility.
Ability to perform various routine, and maintenance procedures on high-throughput genomic platforms.
Knowledge of genomic approaches, including genome sequencing, genotyping, transcriptomics, and metagenomics.
Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including preparation of genomic and transcriptomic libraries.
Knowledge of genomic data analysis concepts and high-capacity data storage systems.
Ability to design projects and experiments related to genomic platforms.
Ability to incorporate the use of automation equipment with genomic platforms.
