University Police Officer
Perform law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, understand access control systems, circulation and safety systems, effect arrests, and emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders, as directed by superior officers, and as proscribed in the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Training Academy (or equivalent) and other departmental trainings. Supports the University community by providing information and assistance. Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides police and security services while protecting life and property. Performs police patrol duties on foot, by motor vehicle, and/or bicycle, to include response to all calls for service, suspicious activities and emergencies.
Enforces all United States, District of Columbia laws and University rules and regulations. Supports the university community by establishing and maintaining an environment in which all community members can go safely about their varied activities in the best interest of the university.
Accurately and thoroughly prepares incident reports. Safeguards information and evidence to ensure successful follow up and resolution. Initiates preliminary investigations of criminal and traffic incidents. Conduct traffic enforcement, and provide first responder aid when required. Supports and provides assistance to persons who have been victims of crime. Attends court for case review and testimony whenever necessary, regardless of other commitments.
As part of the community-oriented policing program, regularly gathers and reports intelligence related to public safety and crime prevention.
Conducts crime risk analysis within the campus assigned area. Identifies and analyzes recurring community problems and works to identify responses to them. Prepares and coordinates tasks to be accomplished within the campus assigned area.
Prepares evaluation reports describing task accomplishment related to community policing goals and objectives. Conducts speaking presentations on topics, which have been identified through surveys and analysis without supervision. In furtherance of the university's higher education objectives, becomes well acquainted with members of the University community.
In the absence of the Communications Officer, answers all telephone calls. Responds to emergencies, burglar alarms, fire alarms and requests for service.
Monitors all burglar/security alarms, cameras and fire alarms, tracks University Police activities at dispatch. Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma (or equivalent) required; College Degree preferred
3 years of general work experience required. 1 to 3 years of security, law enforcement or military experience is preferred; An equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver's certification
All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Campus Special Police Officer Commission
Must be able to complete all required university police training to include certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Subject Restraint. Training includes successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy within the probation period
For Lateral Hires: Must have current certification in Baton/OC Spray. Must have successfully completed the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent training and certification from a civilian or military law enforcement academy. Should have basic to intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures
Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications is essential. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is desirable. Administrative and clerical skills are a plus
Must possess tact, patience, a professional and courteous demeanor, and a pleasant personality in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members. Must respect the use of police powers in relation to a University environment. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing, are essential
Position is considered as essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Very Heavy: Daily requirements to move items up to 20lbs of weight. Frequently required over 50lbs of weight and walk or stand with operation of controls. Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing over 100lbs.
