ABOUT THE COLLEGE: Northern Essex Community College serves approximately 6,000 credit students each semester on two campuses located in the beautiful, historic Merrimack Valley region of northeast Massachusetts. Our suburban Haverhill campus sits on 106 acres near Kenoza Lake and features a Technology Center and an award-winning Student One-Stop Center. ABOUT THE NECC CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM: In January 2020, Northern Essex Community College will launch a new Culinary Arts Program designed to meet the growing demand for talented, well-trained individuals across the hospitality and restaurant sectors in Massachusetts. The program will be located in a new, state-of-the-art facility, with two kitchens, new equipment, and classrooms featuring high tech teaching aids. Prospective students will include recent high school graduates, food service employees, career changers, and entrepreneurs. The program will start small, initially leading to a Certificate, but overtime build to approximately 100 students.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Northern Essex Community College is seeking an experienced Consultant to serve as the Project Manager for the initial phase of the new Culinary Arts Program. During this phase, the Project Manager will work with the Dean and other college leaders on five broad areas related to the program:
Promote the culinary arts program with the restaurant and hospitality sectors, potential students, and other key stakeholders across the region.
Organize regular employer and civic engagement activities to secure robust public and private sector support for the culinary arts program.
Collaborate with key stakeholders within the college community to align the culinary arts with related disciples, especially with Noncredit Courses.
Work with faculty and dean on an internal review of the existing curriculum to update or revise as needed, based on input from employers and other stakeholders.
Monitor the construction of the Haverhill Heights building, with specific attention paid to the buildout of the two NECC floors and the installation of equipment.
Develop and implement an industry engagement strategy to involve representatives from local restaurants, food service vendors, and hospitality venues.
Develop and implement a promotional strategy with Marketing Department to raise and maintain awareness of the culinary arts program among key community leaders, employers, and other stakeholders.
Collaborate with local partners, including vocational and comprehensive high schools, community-based organizations, and employers to align the program development with the needs and trends across the culinary sector.
Initiate relationships with local employers to develop internship opportunities for credit and non-credit students.
Work with NECC faculty to develop innovative noncredit-to-credit articulation agreements.
Collaborate with community-based organizations to develop programs that could serve special populations, such as veterans, youth, career changers, and life-long learners.
Attend periodic curriculum review meetings where NECC faculty review and, if needed, revise curriculum based on trends and input from stakeholders.
Develop and implement a space utilization plan that assigns classrooms and faculty space accordingly.
Convene and chair meetings of the Hospitality and Culinary Advisory Committee as necessary and invite additional stakeholders to serve on the Committee as needed.
Promote the facility for off-hour use by entrepreneurs, caterers, and specialty food vendors on a rental basis.
Maintain ongoing communications with the site developer’s representative to monitor the building progress and respond to any facilities issues related to the Culinary Arts Program.
Bachelor’s degree in Culinary, Marketing, Management or related field.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience consulting on the development of new, multi-year projects.
At least five (5) years of experience in culinary arts, restaurant management, or the food service industry.
Strong writing and public speaking skills.
Experience in a post-secondary academic setting is a plus.
