The VDSS Deputy Commissioner of Human Services will be directly responsible for the core services and public assistance programs that help families in need become self-sufficient. The Deputy Commissioner oversees lines of businesses that focus on policy development, program design and assessing program outcomes.
VDSS is one of the largest Commonwealth agencies, partnering with 120 local departments of social services, along with faith-based and non-profit organizations, to promote the well-being of children and families statewide. We proudly serve alongside 1,650 (state) and 8,500 (local) human services professionals throughout the Social Services System, who ensure that thousands of Virginia's most vulnerable citizens have access to the best services and benefits available to them. Some of the services facilitated by DSS are Foster Care and Adoption, Medical Assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Community Support, Child Support, and Abuse and Neglect care. The departments’ mission is to help people triumph over poverty, abuse and neglect to shape strong futures for themselves, their families and communities.
Requirements include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, or a human services field from an accredited college or university. Familiarity with the legislative process and federal, state, and local structure as it pertains to the VDSS is necessary. The successful candidate will have seven to ten years of managerial/supervisory experience with the demonstrated ability to inspire and foster a culture of continuous learning and employee development. The ideal candidate with have a strong commitment to public service.
The salary range is negotiable and competitive based on experience and qualifications with excellent benefits including participation in an independent retirement system.
