The Operating Room Technician First Assistant works in a dual role in accordance with established department procedures as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and medical staff credentials procedures as a Certified Surgical Technologist. The First Assistant (CST-FA) will work as part of a team to setup operating rooms and assist surgeons in major surgical services and on complex surgical procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, etc. In addition, the CST-FA role extends to prepare and position the patient for surgery, assist in visualization of the operating field, provide hemostasis, harvest surgical grafts, perform closure of incisions, and apply various wound dressings at the direction of the surgeon.
The First Assistant can expect to perform the following:
Assist in Operating Room and Labor and Delivery.
Assist surgeon during surgical procedure.
Provide homeostasis, harvest surgical grafts, perform closure of incisions, and apply various wound dressings at the direction of the surgeon.
Educate and prepare surgical team according to procedure.
Coordinate with surgeon on specialty needs prior to procedure: Equipment and supplies.
Coordinate and collaborate with system vetting vendors on behalf of surgeon/department.
Support all service lines and surgeons identified through credentialing.
Contacting pharmacy for RX with Registered Nurse/Circulating nurse collaboration.
Research/coordinate quotes for capital purchase, new equipment and supplies with specialty coordinators.
Assist in management and tracking surgical charges.
Provides homeostasis by applying the electrocantery to clamps or vessels in a safe and knowledgeable manner, sponging bodily fluids utilizing suction techniques, applying clamps to superficial vessels and typing off the vessel or applying electrocantery.
Placing homeostatic suture ligature and/or placing hem clips on vessels at direction of surgeon.
Assists at the end of the procedure by stabilizing the drain, cleaning surgical wound and/or applying dressing.
Scrubs for cases in major surgical services according to established procedures and standards requiring
advanced knowledge of anatomy, surgical instruments, surgeons' preference and other technical knowledge.
Prepares operating room according to surgical procedure schedules and arrange sterile setup of instrument table supplies and equipment required for specific procedures.
Receives surgical specimens following specimen protocol and notifies circulating nurse of source material and delivers to appropriate location.
Cleans Operating Rooms following each case by removing drapes, replacing hamper bags and trash bags, disposing of used supplies, cleaning and returning equipment to appropriate storage areas, etc.
Cares for all instruments (including micro, etc.) requiring special handling and wraps instruments in preparation for gas or steam sterilization. Perform quality control procedures on equipment and/or report any issues.
Stays current regarding developments in surgical equipment, trends and techniques through attendance at in-service or other internal education programs. Acts as a resource and preceptor to those learning the scrub role.
Create, correct and/or update surgeon preference cards to reflect equipment, radiology, supplies and specialty notes for current and future procedure.
The ideal candidate for The Operating Room Technician First Assistant is someone who is able to maintain effective communication with patients and staff; and ensure appropriate protocols with procedures and customer satisfaction.
