The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE) at Rutgers University invites applications for a full time, 12 month calendar year, tenure track faculty position at the rank of County Agent III (equivalent to Assistant Professor).
The position will provide leadership and support for the commercial nursery, christmas tree, and greenhouse production in Monmouth County and throughout the central region of NJ with specific emphasis, expertise, and research in innovative practices in field and container production; IPM management for field and greenhouse pests and diseases (biotic and abiotic); and the horticultural industry in general.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's degree from accredited institution in horticultural science, agricultural science, entomology, plant pathology or related field is required. In addition, three years minimum post-degree professional experience required for appointment to the rank of County Agent III (equivalent to Assistant Professor). Effective public speaking and presentation skills for program delivery and communications to clientele are required. Computer proficiency is required.
Research experience in experimental design, data collection, evaluation and analysis is preferred. Experience / background in production agriculture / horticulture preferred. Supervisory or managerial experience as it relates to staff and volunteer management is preferred.
Evidence of successfully training, mentoring, and evaluating staff, ensuring the requirements and objectives of program outreach and impact. Have the ability to work cooperatively and communicate with staff, volunteers, and clientele.
Willingness and dedication to commit to the long hours associated with the position are expected – evening and weekend events expected with Monmouth County Board of Agriculture, Agriculture Development Board, Soil Conservation District, etc.
Current NJDEP Pesticide Applicators License in the appropriate categories (3ABC and/or 10), or ability to acquire same within 9 months post-hire. A valid NJ driver's license or ability to acquire said license is a necessity for the performance of this position
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated expertise in and provide leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate educational programming, applied and evaluative research, and development of innovative practices appropriate to the needs of the clientele in commercial nursery, christmas tree, and greenhouse production and management
Working knowledge of the horticulture industry in general
Understanding of the commercial landscape maintenance industry, including IPM and invasive pest management
Provide supervision to the Rutgers Master Gardener volunteer program of Monmouth County
Ability to adapt to changing dynamics of the industry, the demands of the position, and emerging needs of the county
Design and implement applied or evaluative research with measurable impacts on clientele and the profession
Collaborate with farmers and agricultural groups, municipal and county governments, non-governmental organizations in the county and region, and the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department's Nursery Working Group
Assess needs, share research-based information to achieve knowledge gain and skills development, and document changes in clientele practice or conditions
Coordinate implementation of programmatic efforts with fellow RCE faculty and staff to develop outreach/education methods and materials
Expected to garner external resources through grants and contracts, and alternative funding streams for support of the program
Participate in appropriate Departmental, Cooperative Extension, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES), School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers University, state and county administrative functions, including water allocation permits, animal waste management plans, farmer plates, open burning permits, etc.
Expected to establish an outstanding program in commercial nursery production, the merits of which will lead to regional and/or national recognition
