PRIMARY FUNCTION: To direct the practice of Psychiatric Social Work within the psychiatric crisis team and the inpatient psychiatric unit for the Christiana Care Health System. Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of social work services furnished. Ensures Psychiatric Social Work services are furnished in accordance with accepted standards of practice and established policies and procedures. Works in collaboration with psychiatrists, internists, emergency medicine physicians and case managers to ensure that the needs of individuals in behavioral health crisis and individuals admitted to the inpatient psychiatric service are being met. Routinely rotates in a clinical fashion as a Psychiatric Social Worker.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Selects orients and develops a team of Psychiatric Social Workers while developing standards of performance.
Evaluates clinical and professional performance in collaboration with Psychiatry leadership. Initiates recommendations for personnel actions as needed.
Serves as coach and mentor for staff, spending considerable time ensuring their competency and ongoing professional development.
Ensures that the crisis team and inpatient unit are adequately staffed with Psychiatric Social Work coverage by developing and distributing a coverage schedule to staff and the department at least 90 days in advance.
Develops and implements a consistent assessment protocol and documentation format for the Psychiatric Social Workers on the crisis team and the inpatient unit.
Develops a consistent protocol and documentation format for discharge planning on the crisis team and inpatient unit.
Conducts routine audits of case documentation for all social workers in each setting to ensure documentation is appropriate, complete and that patient needs identified in the social work assessment are included in the overall goals of treatment for the individual.
Ensures that all staff are provided with routine education and training in psychiatric assessment and suicide assessment methodologies. Competency evaluation of all staff with these methodologies is completed annually. Documentation of this routine education and annual competency assessments are up to date.
Ensures social workers are fully included and engaged as participating members of the treatment team for both crisis and inpatient services.
Routinely conducts patient rounds in the inpatient unit or with those medical patients who have utilized the crisis service to evaluate their feedback on the process and identify any opportunities to enhance the patient experience.
Implements a mechanism for the Psychiatric Social Work team to conduct follow up on high risk patients following discharge to ensure that the discharge plan is implemented.
Implements a quality review process to review all difficult cases, patient events and opportunities for improvement. Develops an annual performance improvement plan for Psychiatric Social Work.
Knowledge of and routine networking with community agencies to address gaps in care or service as well as opportunities for improvement or service enhancement.
Understands the mental health code and patient bill of rights.
Understands the process for the voluntary and involuntary admission of individuals.
Understands all relevant State and Federal regulations that govern the facility's responsibilities, specific to this department.
Collaborates with other facility departments as appropriate, ie. Utilization review, nursing, social work etc. regarding coordination of care.

Maintains standards of confidentiality in accordance with CCHS policy as well as all application regulations, including HIPAA.
Performs work safety, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Masters Degree in Social Work plus 2 or more years of post master experience on an inpatient or crisis setting; or
Bachelors Degree in Social Work with a minimum of 5 years of experience on an inpatient or crisis or inpatient setting
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred
Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, correspondence, memos and similar business materials. Ability to effectively present information both in a one-on-one and a group situation to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
Ability to apply problem-solving skills to situations involving multiple variables that arise in the setting of a behavioral health crisis.

Professionalism is essential. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Also required are a customer service orientation, a teamwork approach, flexibility, and discretion/ diplomacy.
