The Waste Management, Recycling and Sustainability Manager applies professional concepts and skills to support the planning, coordination and implementation of sustainability efforts for the University. The incumbent will manage all aspects of the campus-wide Integrated Waste Management and Recycling Program. Oversees and provides program guidance to the Waste Diversion & Recycling Supervisor in planning, organizing and coordinating waste disposal and recycling activities and resources at UC San Diego. Establishes annual goals for waste minimization and recycling and consults with staff and faculty in departments and organizations engaged in recycling programs.
Works closely with Local, State and Federal government agencies to monitor and analyze changes in waste disposal, recycling, and zero waste related industries. Provides administrative and technical support to campus Waste Minimization Advisory Committee. Manages and oversees the landscape services support for all Campus food forest and community garden activities. Oversees and provides program guidance to the Sustainability Landscape Technician in the planning, organizing and coordinating of work at all campus food forest and garden locations.
Provides leadership to the Waste Diversion & Recycling Supervisor in matters related to complex day-to-day operational and customer service issues, and Waste Disposal Company refuse issues. Responsible for budgetary planning and funds control within assigned area; oversees operational budget. Administers the campus-wide contracts made with outside Waste, Recycling, and other Zero Waste Support Vendors; approves vendor invoices to ensure accuracy of customer billing. Supervisory authority includes hiring, assignment, evaluation, discipline and dismissal of staff; authority to make exceptions in emergency situations to departmental policies; participation in policy setting processes. Maintains equipment and tools inventory.
Graduation from college with a major in business administration, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, or related degree and progressively responsible experience in management of physical plant operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated ability and experience in managing vendor contracts.
Demonstrated knowledge in the area of environmental sustainability and policy.
Proven experience managing and administering a maintenance area including budget, planning, staffing and technical operations.
Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of U.S. Green Building Council rating systems.
Experience with and thorough knowledge of sustainability concepts and practices, including LEED systems, climate action plans, and waste management practices.
Skill in planning and implementing sustainability focused practices. Ability to define program goals and objectives, target campus audience and implement effective education and outreach strategies to expand campus involvement.
Proficient in all software applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Access) and database applications. Ability to organize information, extract relevant data, and prepare reports in various formats.
Proven ability to draft clear, concise correspondence, develop presentations and business documents. Ability to develop and deliver training, and measure training effectiveness.
Solid decision making and reasoning skills, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and conduct operations analysis and quality control analysis.
Ability to build collaborative relationships and business partnerships. Ability to work with diverse populations at all levels of the organization, including students, staff and faculty.
Strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills, including active listening, flexibility, and critical thinking. Experience communicating verbally, in writing and electronically.
Solid and effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel. Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others and maintain solid productivity and high morale.
