Francis Parker School is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1300 students in grades JK-12. Overlooking Mission Valley, two separate campuses serve students in Lower School – junior kindergarten through 5th grade; Middle School – 6th grade through 8th grade and Upper School – 9th grade through 12th grade. Francis Parker School seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and passionate educator to teach English in our 6-12 English Department.
The Middle School, which includes grades 6-8 and enrolls 300+ students, is a lively and dynamic place. True to the vision of the school’s namesake, Colonel Francis W. Parker, the Middle School emphasizes the importance of learning through doing. A rigorous curriculum guided by a passionate and caring faculty nurtures in students a lifelong love of learning.
The Upper School, which includes grades 9-12 and enrolls 500+ students, is a rigorous and supportive academic environment focused on preparing students for intellectual engagement while in high school and in the years beyond. Building on the work of the Lower and Middle Schools, the Upper School emphasizes academic achievement, global citizenship, and strength of character in order to prepare students to make a meaningful difference in the world.
The preferred candidate will have a depth of content knowledge that equips her or him teach in the Upper School, while also having the broad teaching repertoire required for a range of both learners and grade levels. For 2019-20, open teaching assignment will most likely include, but may not be limited to, courses in both the Middle and Upper School. Broad ability to teach a variety of courses in the 6-12 continuum including Advanced Placement, Journalism, and publications courses is a plus. The exact teaching assignment is based on both the needs of the department and the particular experience and skill set of the teacher. As such, flexibility is a must!
Developing and executing classroom lessons; assigning relevant coursework; creating and administering thoughtful assessments; evaluating student performance.
Working with a wide range of age appropriate literary texts.
Working collaboratively with the department and the assigned grade-level team.
Employing a variety of methodologies in facilitating student writing.
Planning and teaching a challenging course of study in a developmentally appropriate manner with experience in differentiating instruction.
Communicating and meeting with parents when necessary.
Advising and mentoring a group of students.
Meeting with students and colleagues as required.
Participating in the curricular improvement of the department.
Willingness to initiate or participate in co-curricular activities such as Global Education Trips/Discovery Week, Camp, Academic League, Scribe - our student magazine, or Coaching Athletics.
Participating in the daily life of the school and taking on additional and appropriate extra-curricular responsibilities.
A degree and preferably a teaching certificate in English
The ability to passionately and effectively teach both Middle and Upper School English
The ability to serve as an advisor and mentor to Middle School or Upper School students
A strong and sincere commitment to professional development both in pedagogy and content area
High standards and high expectations for students
Commitment to being a positive and contributing member of the professional community
