The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) is seeking an Extension Educator (Pesticide Education Specialist) trained in Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, or other related field to join our nationally recognized PSEP. As a member of the PSEP, the individual will be responsible for actively working to identify important educational learning objectives, develop numerous educational materials and video programs, and present at educational events to support these learning objectives throughout the state. The individual will be expected to support the program's established deliverables.
The individual in this position will be able to provide educational information throughout Iowa on pesticide modes of action, formulations, application techniques, toxicity and hazard, drift, and effects on the environment. Educational information will be focused on ornamentals, turfgrass, and other specialty based programs (e.g., greenhouse, forestry, aquatics, right-of-way, fruit and vegetable). Critical responsibilities will include creating and developing Pesticide Applicator Continuing Instruction Courses (CIC's) in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), presenting at numerous recertification training programs throughout the state, and managing the process of revising specialty based pesticide applicator category study materials and accompanying exam question banks. Other responsibilities include becoming familiar with federal and state laws and regulations that govern pesticides; helping to develop audio-visual programs, multimedia projects, and various printed materials; and supporting our web presence.
The successful candidate will be stationed at Iowa State University in Ames, IA and will be required to present programming at various training programs, travel to appropriate meetings, and participate in professional development activities related to pesticide safety education. Proficiency in the use of computer software packages such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. The preferred candidate will have excellent presentation, writing, and communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The individual must be able to work effectively individually, in a team, and with diverse audiences within the state. All department members are expected to interact collegially and in a professional manner and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Advanced degree in Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, or other related field.
Experience in Extension or Education.
Experience with Continuing Instruction Courses on ornamental, turfgrass and other specialty based programs, pest management, integrated pest management, and human health and environmental issues associated with pesticide use.
Experience with pesticide modes of action, formulations, application techniques, toxicity and hazard, drift, and effects on the environment.
Experience in the delivery of education programs involving technical or scientific information (print or video).
