DUTIES: Seeking Physician Assistant or Orthopaedic Physician Assistant to function in practice under the authority of the supervising physician in accordance with established policies and procedures. Functions shall include: Performing skilled services and procedures within the clinical setting, inclusive of out-patient and in-patient facilities where privileges have been granted accordingly. The incumbent will serve as part of the patient treatment and management team by performing preadmission patient evaluation and work-up, including history and physical assessment, patient education and the institution of routine orders as per the MD. Administering aspirations and injections, the removal and application of casts/splint. Assist with and perform digital blocks, hematoma blocks, and the use of local anesthetics, the reduction of fractures, dislocations, and the removal or excision of superficial orthopedic hardware, the application and execution of orthopedic services and procedures such as suture removal, dressing changes. Services may also be performed in primary orthopedic care, pre-operative care, intra-operative care, and post-operative care. Institute in-house, transfer and discharge orders. (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION) QUALIFICATIONS: Qualifications: PA REQUIRES: NYS PA licensure & bachelor's degree from an approved PA program. OPA REQUIRES: Applicants must complete item 1 (the Exam Requirement) and either item 2, 3 (a. or b.) or 4 as stated below: 1. Must pass the National Board Certification Examination for Orthopedic Physician Assistants (NBCOPA) and have the Professional Testing Corporation send your exam results to the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions; AND 2. Must complete a program for the training of orthopedic assistants or the equivalent that is approved by the NYSED; OR 3. (a) Complete an educational training program through military experience leading to orthopedic specialist, orthopedic cast room technician or orthopedic clinic technician rating and complete two years of satisfactory experience as an orthopedic assistant working under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon within the past five years; OR (b) Complete medical corps school and five years of satisfactory experience as an orthopedic assistant working under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon within the past eight years; OR 4. Have completed an extensive health-oriented education and, within the past eight years, have completed five years of satisfactory experience as an orthopedic assistant working under the supervision of an orthopedic surgeon. Infection Control and Barrier Precautions: Registered specialist assistants must complete course work or training appropriate to their practice regarding infection control and barrier precautions, including engineering and work controls to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice. Coursework must be completed no later than 90 days after initial licensure/registration and every four years thereafter. Applicants must attest compliance to the NYSED at the time of each registration.
