The Department of Radiation Oncology of Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a nurse practitioner (NP) or physicianâs assistant (PA). The NP/PA would be involved in the pretreatment education of patients with teaching on the logistic of radiation treatment as well as side effects. The NP/PA will also be responsible for assisting in clinic while patients are on treatment to help assess and address acute side effects. In the post treatment setting responsibilities would include formulating appropriate follow up and evaluations for their specific disease site as well as the treatments that they have received. The NP/PA must have a strong foundation in evaluating evidence based publications and will also participate in outreach programs.
Key Functions and Expected Performances:
Hours are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Provide high-quality, high-value, cost-effective care for patients undergoing radiation therapy
Educating patients on necessary follow up to mitigate side effects. Coordination of diagnostic studies/lab tests and appropriate referrals to other providers (medical oncology, surgery, endocrinology, GI, lymphedema, nutrition, psychiatry, etc.), social services, and survivorship clinic; record and review patient cases with supervising physician
Prior to treatment, provide education to new patients and their families with detailed information about the radiation treatment process and the potential side effects of radiation in a site specific manner.
While on treatment, educate, evaluate and treat patients concerning the acute and chronic effects from radiation therapy. Perform physical examinations of on-treatment clinic patients with assessment of normal and abnormal findings; obtain, record, and maintain a problem oriented heath history and progress note; record and review patient cases with supervising physician as appropriate
Initiate appropriate interventions; evaluate and record patient/family response within practice protocol; prescribe medications per protocol/physician consultation; instruct patients and families regarding new medications
Order and evaluate routine laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging studies, and therapeutic procedures
Recognize situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary
Facilitate the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services when necessary
Assist physicians with radiation delivery procedures as needed; conduct patient assessments and collaborate with physician regarding appropriate care of patients
Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources
In post-treatment visits, assess and manage the long-term health consequences of cancer treatment and ensure the integration of cancer prevention into the care of patients
**Minimum Qualifications Required**
Two Years of Experience as an NP/PA
**Preferred Qualifications **
Experience in radiation oncology, a surgical oncology specialty or medical oncology is preferred, but not required.
Prior managerial experience is preferred but not required.
