The Dean of the School of STEM reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, is an active member of the College’s Academic leadership team, and supports the College’s overall mission, strategic plan, and goals. The Dean has general responsibility for the quality of the courses, programs, activities, academic services and also oversees and supports programmatic accreditation efforts within the school. In addition, the Dean manages the faculty, staff, and resources of the school’s various departments and promotes a focus on student learning, retention and success. At the School of STEM, the Dean models and promotes collegiality and addresses departmental concerns, interests, and objectives in the context of the needs of the College, students, and community. The Dean works closely with directors and coordinators and serves as the primary liaison between faculty activities and administrative functions in an environment that values teamwork and innovative practices. This position serves as an enthusiastic and informed ambassador for initiatives central to the College’s commitment to excellence, innovation and efficiency in serving a diverse student body and in supporting a diverse faculty and staff. The Dean supports the College’s regional and national reputation as a leader among community colleges. This position is expected to teach at least one class per year.
1. Provides collaborative, team-based leadership by addressing departmental, school, divisional, and institutional concerns through regular meetings with faculty, staff, and the Vice President of Academic Affairs; provides oversight for school enrollment, registration, advising, and mentoring, and other activities. 2. Provides leadership and oversight for departmental plans relating to academic programs, curriculum, master schedule, and learning environments to assure institutional effectiveness and efficiencies that maximize resources, balance competing demands, respond to students’ needs, and meets all state/accreditation requirements and compliance frameworks. 3. Encourages and guides faculty and staff to assess courses, programs, and pedagogical approaches using a data- and evidence-informed approach to improve student learning. 4. Provides analysis and advocacy for the school’s resource needs and allocations, including statements of financial impacts of proposed actions and initiatives; coordinates, reviews and approves departments’ goals and budgets within the context of College fiscal sustainability and stability 5. Oversees the development of divisional procedures and criteria governing the appraisal of professional performance, reviewing departmental appraisals and making independent recommendations to the Vice President on matters of retention, tenure and promotion 6. Remains consistent with College policies and procedures when providing guidance and direction in departmental recruitment, hiring, orientation, and development of staff and faculty; serves as a primary resource for support, orientation, and training of faculty and staff under their supervision; manages personnel issues and challenges involving faculty and staff, including facilitation, conflict resolution, and interpretation of college policy. 7. Provides guidance, direction, and experience with grant writing, operations management, special projects, and applied learning experiences and placements; leads or supports College-wide projects and grants, as requested 8. Responds to faculty and staff concerns about student conduct and oversees and participates in the academic grievance process at the departmental and divisional level, ensuring that appropriate processes are followed; responds to student complaints within the mechanisms provided by College policies and procedures 9. Teaches at least one class per year; and remains current on innovative technology and learning methodologies. 10. Related duties, projects and initiatives as assigned
1. Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution in a field related to Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) 2. Seven years of work experience in higher education, including at least four years of academic administration that required demonstrated strategic leadership capabilities, a proven ability to recommend, develop, and implement new or improved strategic plans, processes, procedures, etc., and prior experience with large-scale initiatives, change management, and special projects. 3. At least three years of experience as an effective college teacher. 4. Mastery of the basic skills required in curriculum development and evaluation, and an understanding and appreciation of current major issues and trends in post-secondary education. 5. Evidence of effective interpersonal communication, critical thinking, problem solving, team building, public speaking and mediation skills; and a commitment to continued professional growth and development. 6. Four years of management and/or supervisory experience, of which several years included oversight of an operational department, program, or function having a college wide impact. 7. Demonstrated ability in the use of Microsoft Office Suite; and a database system or other related technology tools that encompassed the analysis of data and creation of detailed documents, reports, charts, surveys, and presentations, etc., and ability to identify needed training or development; may identify new technology that may improve department operations. 8.
