The Geoscience Research and Applications Group has an opening for a Department Manager for the Geophysics Department, Org. 8861. The Manager is responsible for providing leadership and advocacy for a team of highly talented and experienced scientists, technologists, post-docs, contractors, and student interns and working with Senior Scientists. We are seeking a highly motivated team-oriented manager to coordinate current activities across the Geoscience Research and Applications Group (8860) with Sandia's Global Security (GS) programs.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Lead the Upstream Oil and Gas Subprogram within Sandia's Fossil Energy programs working with DOE Headquarters, National Energy Technology Laboratory and Industry sponsors;
Support a diverse customer base including DOE, DoD, DOI, and industry requiring you to build relationships and provide support to the program leadership within SNL that lead projects for these organizations;
Foster a safe, secure, creative and productive work environment for staff which includes oversight and further development of the 500 acre Facility for Acceptance, Calibration and Testing (FACT) site on Kirtland AFB as well as field test activities at the National Nuclear Security Site in Nevada and other remote geophysics test sites;
Management duties include:
Professional development of staff
Management of existing projects through assigned project leads
Development of new projects and programs with existing and new sponsors, and
Ensuring that the organization is responsive to both internal and external needs and requirements.
Bachelor's and advanced degree in STEM (Master's or PhD) or a Bachelor's degree in STEM plus four years' relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree;
Eight or more years of relevant technical experience;
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage projects and deliver results;
Demonstrated experience interacting effectively with multiple levels of internal management and external customers;
Demonstrated ability to manage people, and guide multidisciplinary teams;
Experience with technical business development and evidence of successful results;
Experience working with sensitive information or classified matter;
Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent.
To the degree possible, provide a resume or associated materials that provide evidence of:
Advanced degree in Geophysics is preferred, but degrees and work background in other Earth Science or physics are also attractive such as Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Geomechanics, Petroleum Engineering, or similar disciplines.
Experience managing experiments, laboratories operations, field testing or related operations with particular focus on the Sandia National Laboratories Environmental Safety and Health protocols;
Technical experience related to ground and air based non-proliferation monitoring. Technical experience and project management related to fossil energy exploration and production, well bore design and integrity, and related fields;
Project management experience and demonstrated success leading teams on moderate size or larger projects ($1-5M/yr), along with experience defining customer objectives, working interactively with management, and successful communication with technical and nontechnical customers;
Demonstrated understanding and skill in emotional intelligence, political acumen, and use of appropriate communication skills and servant leader approaches to deal with complex interpersonal situations with those you supervise, peers, and your leadership with successful outcomes;
Demonstrated experience providing an example of ethics and organizational values;
Experience and skill in customer relationship development, understanding customer needs and business models, presenting value propositions, and delivering customer value;
Experience and ability to mentor individuals within and external to direct responsibilities;
Experience and ability to work with teams to develop organizational strategies that identify organization goals and objectives and to develop action plans to accomplish these goals;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Experience and ability to manage multiple, complex tasks in parallel, to organize, prioritize, balance or renegotiate, and follow through to completion;
Two or more years of personnel ("line") management experience;
Ability to undertake business travel to build and sustain customer and partner relationships and knowledge of new science and technology developments;
Knowledge of Sandia's company policies and procedures including safety, security, financial, environmental and other operational areas and how to effectively implement work within this policy framework.
The Geophysics Department at Sandia National Laboratories advances geophysics for energy- and national security.
