Information Technology (IT) auditors beginning the profession come from a variety of backgrounds. Many have an IT-related degree and choose auditing as a new career path. Others may be accountants with an IT background who want to apply their accounting knowledge to IT systems. Others have a master’s degree in any field but have IT work experience and an interest in auditing. IT Staff Auditor 1 is a training and evaluation position. During the first year, you develop a good working knowledge of how to plan, conduct, and document IT processes and controls on a wide variety of computer platforms throughout state government. You will gain a working knowledge of IT auditing techniques; IT best practices and criteria; computer assisted auditing techniques; and basic governmental accounting. We perform our work according to IT auditing standards issued by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and government auditing standards.
Communication (written and verbal)
Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and auditee personnel, including communicating technical matters in a non-technical form.
Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and accept constructive criticism from supervisors.
Conduct inquiries of auditee personnel to gain an understanding IT processes and controls and clearly document that understanding.
Exhibit self-confidence in interview with clients.
Effectively communicate work performed through prepared audit documentation submitted for supervisor review.
Prepare well-organized, logical, and clear audit documentation.
Demonstrate appropriate attention to detail.
Organize audit documentation in a logical order that can be easily followed by supervisors and other members of the audit team.
Organize work flow to ensure meeting established time budgets and required deadlines, including the timely submission of completed audit documentation for supervisor review.
Obtain relevant audit evidence and makes a preliminary evaluation of that evidence to reach logical conclusions.
Identify, assess, and document risks that may prevent achievement of IT goals and objectives.
Assess IT control environments and IT procedures implemented by the auditee to maintain integrity of programs, processing, and data.
Design and perform tests of controls.
Develop recommendations to strengthen the auditee’s IT internal control.
Accept responsibility for actions.
Adhere to LLA standards of conduct and protocols.
Maintain a positive, constructive attitude and work well with others.
Maintain confidentiality of client information.
Meet productivity level of 64%.
Remain flexible to changing work schedules and tasks, including working overtime when required and/or traveling out-of-town on assignments.
Actively work to take and pass the CISA, CISSP, or CPA exam, if not already certified.
A baccalaureate degree in IT (various IT-related degrees are acceptable), accounting or other degree with IT work experience, with at least 6 hours of accounting, from an accredited college or university.
