Polylab Team Lead, Second Shift (1900558) – Charlotte, NC
Where the Chemistry Happens
We are seeking a professional like you to become a member of the BASF Charlotte Polylab group. The Polylab conducts lab experiments in emulsion and solvent borne polymerization serving the construction and coatings industries. Under the direction of the Process Development Manager, you will be responsible for the activities of personnel assigned to your crew. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Polylab during the second shift, and for maintaining a work environment that allows employees to achieve goals in the areas of safety and health, environment, quality, cost control and productivity through area ownership and team responsibility. You will also be required to run reactors on second shift and to maintain your familiarity and qualification on all reactor assets in the Polylab.

Formula for Success
Your high-level of organization combined with the flexibility and capability of adapting to daily priority changes will serve you well as you coordinate second shift operational activities, including execution of experimental synthesis recipes. This includes operator time management to maximize accurate and informative experiments while minimizing overtime.
In support of the BASF Process Safety Program, you will maintain an open process safety culture, Zero Incident Mindset, provide and complete safety training, give feedback to operators, and report and investigate incidents.
Your proven leadership and interpersonal skills will be a valued asset as you lead second shift activities in observance of safe work practices, housekeeping, and conflict resolution.
Leveraging your education (preferably in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering) and relevant experience, you will coordinate maintenance for short term resolution of reactor issues to allow activities to proceed and identify systemic issues that need to interrupt operations.
Your capability of working in a structured environment where activities are governed by written procedures, yet being flexible enough to work in an environment of scientific experimentation, along with your working knowledge of control hardware and software (preferably experience in debugging PLC based control systems), will aid you in maintaining familiarity with all Polylab assets and critical utilities toward being able to assist in diagnostics of operational issues.
Demonstrating your working knowledge of the mechanics and operation of different types of process equipment (e.g. pumps, valves, agitators, instrumentation and controls etc.) and the mechanical aptitude to work on this type of equipment in a laboratory environment, you will maintain your certification as an active reactor operator on at least one type of reactor asset. Additionally, you will carry out daily experiments operating reactors, producing polymer, and reporting results.
Effectively communicating with scientists, peers, and management, you will ensure that information is exchanged at all levels. This includes self-direction of work schedule to ensure Team Lead job duties are balanced with reactor operation responsibilities.
Utilizing your strong understanding and awareness of chemicals, their nature, hazards, safety and health issues combined with your extensive experience with safety practices and techniques related to the chemical industry (e.g. LOTO, Hot Work), you will direct the activities of second shift workers in the event of incidents or plant emergencies.
Your ability to lead coworkers to success through effective performance feedback and creating a second shift culture of productivity, teamwork, and safety in which all accidents are preventable will be useful in providing feedback to Engineers regarding Operator performance management.
