Director of Housing and Residential Live The Director of Housing and Residential Life is a live-on position responsible for advancing a student-centered, learning-based residential educational program that emphasizes personal growth and development. The Director will provide visionary leadership with an equity and inclusionary mindset towards creating a residential environment that provides transformational student services that promotes student success, retention, persistence, and engagement. The Director will provide leadership for facilities management, assignments and occupancy management and assessment activities. In addition to the daily operations, is responsible for strategic planning, and emergency planning. The position also involves extensive collaboration and cooperation with key units such as Campus Safety, Enrollment Management, Finance and Facilities Management and plays an integral role in the persistence and success efforts on campus.
The Residential Life and Housing program consists of over 800 residential undergraduate students. The Director will supervise the management of six residence halls, seven apartment units located in a nearby apartment complex. The Director will directly supervise an Assistant Director, Area Director and the Housing Manager.
Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week Exempt Status: Exempt Full Time/Part Time status: Full time Salary Range: $50,000-$55,129 (housing included); Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.
Reports to: Associate Dean for Campus Life
Location/Department: Whittier College (Main Campus)/Housing and Residential Life
Select, train, and supervise three professional staff members consisting of an Assistant Director, Area Director and the Housing Manager.
Provides leadership to the selection, training, and supervision of Community Advisors.
Provides leadership in the development and implementation of the programming model.
Coordinates the implementation and on-going development of living learning communities.
Lead in the development and implementation of the assessment plan for residence life.
Oversees the emergency response for Housing and Residence Life staff in relation to response times, schedule, protocol, post incident assessment, and training related to emergency response.
Direct all operations and maintenance activities required to provide high quality housing facilities.
Serve as a liaison between facilities, housekeeping and residential life to insure that facilities are being maintained in a consistent and timely manner.
Responsible for budgets facility operations, and occupancy management for housing consisting of approximately 850 beds.
In tandem with the Associate Dean for Campus Life develop and Director of Student Rights & Responsibilities, maintain and revise housing policies on an annual basis.
Works alongside the Director of Student Rights & Responsibilities in adjudicating student conduct cases when needed.
Serves as a team member for the Campus Life Cluster leadership team.
Ensures programs are effectively coordinated and managed to maximize student learning and development as outlined in CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education) standards.
Effectively collaborates with departments in the Division of Student Life, Academic Affairs, as well as other internal and external constituents.
Collects, analyzes, and reviews data in developing progress reports and evaluations for making data-guided decisions and recommendations regarding the various student engagement programs and services.
Develops and implements policies and procedures for housing and residence hall operations including housing and revenue projections, contract provisions, processing applications, housing assignments, damages and billing procedures.
Serve as a member of the residence life on-call rotation.
Insures that there is consistent and professional communication with students and their families when needed.
Oversees the housing selection process utilizing StarRez.
Evaluates and assesses College housing occupancy, retention, and projection trends.
Collaborates with other campus departments, including Campus Safety, Information Technology, Facilities, Housekeeping, and the Business Office to address student needs.
Serves as a member of the Student Life Crises Response Team and the Poet Early Alert Program (PEAP).
Additional Functions of the Job: 1. Serve as a Title IX investigator. 2. Represent the College as appropriate in its relationship with the community, government agencies, professional organizations, and other groups. 3. Attend division wide meetings. 4. Serve on institutional committees as requested. 5. Other duties as assigned.
Position Specifications and Requirements: Previous Experience: Four to six years of professional experience in student affairs and a commitment to the ideals of liberal arts education. Demonstrated sensitivity and experience in responding to student crises. Proven track record of successfully leading, creating, implementing and evaluating diversity and inclusion programs and the ability to translate vision into creative, tangible practices.
Knowledge and Education: Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related field required. A strong intellectual framework for understanding and articulating issues of diversity and inclusion. A strong understanding of residence life and the role it plays in engaging students and contributing to their persistence and success.
