THE LEAD CENTER: The LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Advising and Development) Center, a department in the Division of Student Affairs, is at the center of student life at UC Berkeley. This campus department is responsible for facilitating leadership development among our students, supporting students as they build community on campus, and encouraging student involvement and engagement within the campus community. As a team of dedicated and committed student affairs professionals, the LEAD Center promotes a student-centered learning environment by advising and empowering students to pursue their co-curricular interests, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to develop holistically. The LEAD Center provides services and resources focused on furthering students’ leadership abilities as well as personal and professional development—hence positively impacting the holistic learning and development of all UC Berkeley students. More specifically, the LEAD Center provides advising and leadership development opportunities to student groups, including 1,000+ registered student organizations (RSOs), over 35 student publications, 60+ recognized fraternities and sororities, student government, SUPERB (the campus programming board), the recruitment and retention centers, various student cooperative communities, and campus-wide student leadership development and training initiatives and programs.
OVERVIEW: The LEAD Center Coordinator for Fraternity & Sorority Advising and Leadership Development provides ongoing transformational advising services for the four governing councils (Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council) and their respective chapters. Advising includes organizational development, leadership, budget management, programming, recruitment, risk management, officer transitions, and ethical decision making and will assist individuals and chapters in addressing problems related to personal, academic, and organizational needs. Additionally, this position provides advising to at least one of the CalGreeks affinity groups (Greeks Against Sexual Assault (GASA), CalGreeks Alcohol Taskforce (CAT), etc.). Lastly, this position will develop, implement, and assess various fraternity and sorority-wide leadership programs.
STUDENT GROUP ADVISING AND COACHING: •Provides advising services for 60 fraternity and sorority chapters and 4 governing councils utilizing student development and leadership practices, including organizational development, leadership, budget management, programming, recruitment, networking, officer transitions, and ethical decision making •Develops and implements programs to train and develop members of fraternities and sororities to meet the needs and positive outcomes of different student contingents • Advises and supports specific Greek community initiatives that build a positive learning and leadership culture •Conduct outreach to student leaders and encourage the use of campus programs and services. Provides information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures, and regulations that ensure student success and enhance community •Advocate for diverse and underrepresented communities through needs assessment, presentations, program design and implementation, resource referral, and collaboration with various campus departments •Work closely with other LEAD Center staff to improve and expand existing programs and to develop additional opportunities using needs assessment, research of best practices, coordination of stakeholders, and evaluation of program effectiveness
COLLABORATION AND INTEGRATION WITH CAMPUS WIDE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS: •Coordinate within Student Affairs services, policies, and processes to effectively advise and serve students and fraternity/sorority organizations •Collaborate with departmental colleagues on issues to support the overall campus mission, philosophy and goals. Advises or provides resources that support building effective relationships with faculty, staff and community •Represent the needs of students in fraternity/sorority chapters and councils to campus and community stakeholders through participation on committees, etc.
PROGRAM PLANNING, ASSESSMENT, EVALUATION: • Evaluates all leadership training opportunities using best practice evaluation processes • Measures all learning outcomes associated with LEAD Greek leadership initiative • Researches best practices, materials and new initiatives. With Director, develops plans and goals for new or revised leadership programs, services, policies and practices that enhance Greek community and student culture• Experience working with the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and/or Multi-Cultural Greek Council and its affiliated chapters • Knowledge and experience in fraternity and sorority best practices and current trends • Knowledge and experience in student leadership/student development theory and practice; thorough knowledge of advising and counseling fraternities and sororities including local, regional, inter/national, and culturally-based organizations • Ability to mediate conflict, problem-solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns; effectively serve and understand issues of underrepresented students; and interact at all levels with campus and community constituents and stakeholders with a high level of political acumen • Demonstrated ability communicating effectively one-to-one, in small groups, and in public speaking contexts • Strong organizational and verbal/written communication skills; interpersonal skills with ability to work both collaboratively and independently • Ability to assist in designing, implementing, and facilitating training, leadership and personal development retreats, workshops, and programs for full-time staff, student staff, students, interns and graduate assistants • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with students and professional staff, Division colleagues, and the University community • Ability to manage multiple assignments and projects well in a fast paced, politically charged environment; demonstrate creativity and flexibility in working on various projects with a variety of constituent groups; and have leadership experience demonstrated by creating cross-campus partnerships and collaborations with other colleagues • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience in related field
