Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Lead Lab Accessioner.
In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating all send-out requests. This individual will manage each send out case from the order initiation to the actual send out. The individual will be responsible for communicating with referring clinicians, patients and interdisciplinary units regarding various test options and procedure explanations, identifying for the pathologist what type of order needs to be placed, researching testing options if needed, and managing the send out case process for each request. This individual will communicate with NYS to respond to denied requests and facilitate questions about test options when necessary.
Assists with any and all other duties as assigned.
Works with PAs and pathologists to processes sending-out fresh tissue send-outs to outside laboratories.
Works with clinical laboratories as needed to identify (and research if necessary) tests that should be forwarded to clinical labs for send-outs.
Communicates with outside laboratory sales representatives to set up any processes including kit distribution.
Monitors Epic send-out test worklist. Familiar with epic and the various epic ordering processes as they relate to send-out and molecular testing.
Processes NPL forms with NYS to obtain approval. Works with clinicians to formulate proper clinical justification. Manages and appeals for NYS approval if initial request is denied.
Communicates with clinicians, patients, pathologists, and interdisciplinary staff regarding testing options and regulatory limitations and processes. Researches and finds alternative testing options as necessary.
Researches specific tests at various laboratories as requested by clinicians and their patients. Able to navigate many reference laboratories within the country (and potentially international) to determine if the tests requests are NYS approved.
Transcribes out order requisitions for send out tests on behalf of the pathologist. Includes insurance and clinical test information. Able to identify and notify the pathologist what the ordering requirements are for various send-out tests requested. Reviews with pathologist prior to send-out.
Minimum Qualifications: To qualify you must have a B.S. in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry or related discipline or B.A. with 24 credits in biology and chemistry. 2 years experience in a clinical laboratory. Excellent communication skills, team player with excellent people skills, ability to self-motivate.
Preferred Qualifications: License and Certification: NYSDOH Clinical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Histology Technician. MT(ASCP), MLT(ASCP), HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP). 5 years experience in a clinical laboratory. In depth knowledge of clinical and molecular testing.
