The position would be based in WestEd’s Health & Justice Program. The Health & Justice Program conducts research and evaluation and provides technical assistance and training to address a wide range of needs in areas such as school climate and safety, mental and social emotional well-being, juvenile and adult criminal justice, public health and prevention and related areas. Within the Health & Justice Program, the Justice & Prevention Research Center conducts studies and actively disseminates WestEd’s work in a wide range of areas such as violence prevention, school safety and juvenile justice (jprc.wested.org). Health & Justice has a large and growing portfolio of research and evaluation projects (https://www.wested.org/program/health-and-justice-program/). Examples of Health and Justice research and evaluation projects include an experimental study of the impact of a technology-based intervention on sexual health of juvenile offenders in custody in Oregon, a process and outcomes study of specialized training for law enforcement investigators working to stop online victimization of children, and qualitative case studies of juvenile justice reforms and interventions.
Position Description WestEd is seeking to fill the position of a Senior Research Associate in the Health and Justice Program and the Justice & Prevention Research Center to provide leadership across a variety of projects. The person in this position also has an opportunity to shape future work by leading and collaborating on proposals to a variety of federal and other funding agencies in areas such as public health, social-emotional and mental health, justice, and violence and substance abuse prevention.
Directs research and evaluation projects. This includes engaging with clients, setting out scopes of work and budgets, managing staff and tasks, and leading project reports and other dissemination activities.
Helps to build new work by leading or contributing to proposals in a substantive area of interest relevant to work of the Health and Justice Program and the Justice & Prevention Research Center. The Senior Research Associate will also help to build and cultivate partnerships with strategic persons in government, non-profit organizations, research firms, universities, and other entities to support business development (partnership on proposals, etc.).
Actively contributes to the dissemination of work through presentations through webinars or conferences, publications in outlets as diverse as peer-review journals and blog articles, and other mechanisms.
Actively contributes to a healthy culture and climate within the Health & Justice Program and in the larger WestEd community.
Doctoral degree in public health or social science field (e.g., public policy, criminology/criminal justice)
At least 10 years experience leading and managing research/evaluation projects including client relations, budget and staffing oversight, etc.
Experience in writing and developing winning proposals
Demonstrated ability to disseminate through writing, presenting and other mechanisms, including final project reports, conference and/or webinar presentations, and scholarly journal and/or blog articles.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team and to treat staff and clients respectfully.
