Our new integrated academic and career model will focus student advising around one of six central themes called “Flight Paths.” Each thematic Flight Path will guide students in exploring and planning the academic and career paths aligned with their values, skills, and interests. We are excited to launch this proven approach to enhancing the advising experience for our students while supporting their timely graduation from the University and preparation for their careers. Department Summary The Division of Student Life supports the university’s academic mission through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life houses four departments, the University Career Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Erb Memorial Union, and Physical Education & Recreation, plus a number of key programs, including the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement, Parent and Family Programs, major student events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Student Government Engagement & Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.
The University Career Center helps students as they prepare for the world of work through career education and preparation and connects students to opportunities through a dynamic employer relations model. The Center achieves this through the following: providing information online regarding career options, career paths, employer profiles, and job opportunities; educating students on resources and strategies for job applications, internships, and graduate schools; creating opportunities for interactions between students, employers, and faculty; sharing knowledge of career readiness and employer needs by contributing to professional development and training of Academic and Career Advisors (ACAs) and academic faculty; serving as a central resource to professional schools and colleges for generalized career education and preparation services, resources, and programming; helping students learn to articulate the skills gained in their UO journey; and providing data to help the university share the story of where students land with a UO education.
Position Summary Career Readiness Coaches work collaboratively with Academic and Career Advisors (ACAs) through six thematic career communities called Flight Paths. Within their designated Flight Path, Coaches help students identify opportunities to gain experience relevant to their chosen major and ultimately, career, by providing both developmental career education and just-in-time career preparation to ensure they are successful in landing desired opportunities such as full-time employment, part-time jobs, internships, and experiential learning. This position will proactively help students connect with opportunities by staying up-to-date on employer and industry trends and through frequent collaboration with the University Career Center Employer Engagement Team.
The role of the Career Readiness Coach has three main components: 1) to support exploring students in their assigned flight paths (career communities) by providing advisors across campus with information about relevant experiential and career opportunities, 2) to share specialized career information with academic and career advisors across campus, and 3) to provide direct support to students once they have chosen a major by providing industry-specific career education and preparation programs and services. Programming will require this position to facilitate workshops and instruct courses.
Career Readiness Coaches report to the Assistant Director for Career Readiness, and may supervise and oversee the work of student staff.
Minimum Requirements • Bachelor’s degree. • One year of experience in career services, advising, recruiting, talent management or similar setting.
Professional Competencies • Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working with students, parents, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds in support of an inclusive and multiculturally competent environment. • Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of college students and employers in today’s and tomorrow’s work environment, and how to prepare college graduates for lifelong career success. • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and customer-service orientation. • Technical aptitude and ability to navigate and utilize technology for program administration and service delivery.
Preferred Qualifications • Master’s degree. • At least two years’ experience in career services, advising, recruiting, talent management or similar setting. • Career services experience in a higher education setting.
