The Research Scholar Manager is part of the Office of Postdoctoral and Research Scholars (OPRS) team and serves as the primary point person on academic personnel matters for the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR). The incumbent is an experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it in to practice with in-depth understanding of academic personnel matters; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the functions; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems, issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.
The incumbent will manage and conduct the independent review and analysis of all academic personnel actions, including appointments, merits, promotions, appraisals, and administrative appointments for the General Campus Organized Research Units (ORUs) under the authority of the Vice Chancellor for Research. Provides counsel to the Office of Research Affairs (ORA) leadership, ORU Directors, faculty, and departmental staff regarding academic personnel policies and actions as they pertain to Research Scholars, and makes significant contributions to academic personnel objectives of ORA.
Academic personnel policies and procedures are complex and confidential and require attention to detail and discretion. Sees confidential documents of academic advancement and retention, provides analysis and recommendations, and carries out VCR decisions. Composes and/or edits a wide variety of correspondence for signature of VCR and ORA leadership. Participates in development, analysis and implementation of new policies and processes. This position requires knowledge of policies and procedures related to academic personnel.
The incumbent will also manage the Research Scholar education and training program. Develops curriculum, organizes advancement and compliance workshops, and leads presentations. Manages policy and conducts review of Principal Investigator eligibility and exceptions requests. Ensures that each applicant meets PI criteria to submit for extramural support. Position also assists with the development and implementation of operational strategies and processes for OPRS, and on other projects as assigned.
Requires flexibility in work schedule to meet demanding and changing workload and to address urgent cases in a timely manner.
