The UC San Diego Department of Bioengineering consists of ~25 ladder rank faculty, ~650 enrolled undergraduate students, ~170 graduate students, ~ 60 postdoctoral scholars, and ~120 staff positions. The department is consistently ranked as one of the top departments of Bioengineering in the world. It has a $6M annual allocation of State and University funds and holds a multi-million research portfolio (15.5 MIL in contract & grant expenditures), including awards (but not limited) from the NIH, NSF, other federal flow through, and gifts/private funding. Over the past decade, the exponential increase of research in metabolomics has created an imminent need for a robust data repository that can help the scientific community find, access, interoperate, and reuse the data generated. The National Metabolomics Data Repository is designed to serve this purpose with core components including stored data, interfaces to upload, download, query, display, and analyze data, and a suite of tools to interactively analyze the data. Further, the NMDR will be accessible through an open cloud environment.
Provide expert Web/graphical user interface and database programming for a research project Metabolomics Workbench (http://metabolomicsworkbench.org/). Architect, develop, integrate, and manage complex biological repositories, including multiple databases, interactive web-based applications, websites, and data analysis applications. Provide project leadership for moderately complex data pipelines and application design projects related to the Metabolomics Workbench. Migrate, develop, implement, and/or maintain research application UCSD Metabolomics Workbench.
Design and develop research databases, integrating data from government funded research institutions. Serve as a technical contact to the Metabolomics Workbench team and other programmers regarding application and database programming. Provide advanced technical expertise and analysis in the architecture, design, and programming of complex computer applications. Collaborate with San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) programming staff to ensure optimal web site, computer, and database performance. Develop and maintain a suite of microarray analysis tools, and collaborate and advise a Department of Bioengineering research group in bioinformatics application development.
Degree in computer and/or life sciences with expertise in web development and applications programming.
Demonstrated experience with the Linux operating system and associated software.
Proven experience with relational database development and maintenance, especially Postgres.
Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
Thorough experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
Demonstrated software repository skills. Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
Thorough experience with common programming tools. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
