ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF COASTAL HYDRAULICS AND RESILIENCE - The Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Water Resources Engineering with an emphasis in Coastal Hydraulics. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate how their interdisciplinary research enhances the resilience of coastal communities and their infrastructure to natural disasters and the threat of climate change. We are especially seeking applicants whose specialty areas include: evaluation of the impacts, risks and resilience of coastal hazards through computational modeling, experiment and/or field research; and/or analysis and development of sustainable and resilient solutions that better protect coastal communities and environments. The successful candidate has an excellent opportunity to succeed given Cal Poly's proximity to the coastline, potential for synergistic and interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty in the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences, access to Cal Poly's Research Pier, proximity to Diablo Canyon (a nuclear power plant slated to close in 2025), and local interest in marine renewable energy. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is September 12, 2019.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (a) teaching undergraduate classes and laboratories in coastal hydraulics and water resources engineering, as well as developing and teaching new graduate and undergraduate courses in their area of specialization; (b) supervising undergraduate and graduate-level research; (c) developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs; (d) collaborating with other faculty (both in civil/environmental engineering and in other disciplines) on research and professional development interests; (e) engaging in activities related to service in the form of student club advisement, curriculum development and shared governance.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Earned undergraduate and doctorate degrees in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Coastal Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate was completed prior to the start of the appointment. Experience in Coastal Hydraulics and Resilience, supported by a record of scholarly publications, is preferred. Professional registration and industry/consulting experience are desirable. A commitment to innovation in undergraduate teaching and working in a multidisciplinary and collaborative setting is expected.
Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and laboratory-based instruction, and exhibit potential for professional recognition via research and publication. The department seeks candidates who have an interdisciplinary mindset and who work well in a highly collaborative environment. Demonstrated ability in written and oral use of the English language is required. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Coastal Hydraulics and Resilience, supported by a record of scholarly publications (commensurate with time since degree).
