Stockton University is looking for a dedicated professional to serve in the role of Ombuds Officer. The successful candidate will be required to exercise independent judgment and prudence in dealing with sensitive, confidential matters and remain non-judgmental in investigating and resolving conflict. The person should have proven success in mediation and conflict resolution; with the ability to obtain the trust and confidence of individuals at all organizational levels and make policy change recommendations to administration.
Provides consultative support to individuals who wish to discuss their concerns with an impartial person, inquire about and get information regarding applicable policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and other resources;
Discusses alternatives, goals and plans a strategy for dealing with issues, such as dispute resolution, mediation, coaching, training and consulting;
Serves as a forceful "champion" for fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion; fosters Employee Resource Groups and affinity networks while developing training on topics which may include Dispute Resolution, Respectful Workplace Practices, Bullying and Micro-Aggression Prevention and Change Management.
Coordinates the University mediation program, training and professional development of mediators, intake of mediation engagements and assignment of mediators.
Conducts informal fact finding to better understand an issue from all perspectives.
Remains independent, neutral and impartial and has no assignment of duties that would present a conflict of interest to her/his duties as ombudsperson;
Provides referrals to other University offices to provide additional services (Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, Student Affairs, Office of Military & Veteran Services, Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Employee Relations, Community Wellness and Health Education, Employee Assistance Program, etc.)
Serves as a resource to or member of various university committees such as the Behavior Intervention team, Bias Response Team, Diversity Committee, Employee Resource Groups, Affinity Groups, etc.
Exhibits excellent communication and listening skills.
Demonstrates independence and integrity in creative problem-solving.
Demonstrates sensitivity to diverse populations and awareness of diverse cultures.
Experience with mediation and conflict resolution;
Master's degree is preferred, supplemented by a minimum 5+ years of professional experience.
Experience with the issues affecting higher education and legal/civil service matters and/or labor relations within collectively bargained environments
Knowledge of professional ombuds standards, codes of ethics, procedures, and principles and techniques for informal inquiries.
Demonstrated understanding of diverse cultures and background; inter-culturally competent.
