Both disciplines provide the opportunity and means for meeting major scientific and technological challenges, such as addressing climate change, increasing the world's food supply, synthesizing new materials, and discovering and delivering important drugs. The Dean's Analyst recommends, develops and evaluates academic human resource policies, statutes, programs and procedures covering academic recruitment, appointment, advancement, compensation and salary administration, faculty welfare programs, and faculty equity.
Responsible for managing all academic personnel activities for the College through department chairs, managers, and academic personnel staff.
Provides an in-depth review and analysis of all academic personnel cases submitted to the Dean for both senate and non-senate titles.
Analyzes senate and non-senate merit and promotion cases, faculty retentions, searches and other faculty issues within the College and provides recommendations and analytical material to the Dean.
Prepares extensive background information for senate appointments, merits, promotions, retentions and other senate actions; independently drafts Dean's letters for ladder-rank academic personnel cases and requests. Reviews cases and drafts Dean's letters for senior level non-senate actions.
Supports the Dean in the development of strategic plans and objectives on academic HR issues. Shares responsibility for long-range planning and analysis in support of the instructional, administrative, and overall programmatic goals and objectives of the campus and College. Takes the primary lead in preparing the annual faculty recruitment requests for the dean. Oversees final submission to central campus of all academic personnel requests and recommendations from the College.
Advises department chairs and managers regarding all aspects of academic personnel (senate and non-senate), as well as Unit 18 (lecturer) appointments. Provides advice to the Dean, department chairs and faculty regarding academic personnel administration; recommends strategies for addressing sensitive situations involving academic appointees and/or retention, including situations that involve granting or requesting exceptions to policy. Functions as technical expert to other college academic personnel professionals, advising and coordinating processes and procedures for a variety of sub-units; includes serving as advisor to departmental academic personnel analysts and working closely with business partners in the region.
Devises solutions to unusual requests from academic departments on academic personnel issues. Identifies and utilizes precedent-setting situations to recommend new organizational procedures and practices. Performs and/or oversees special projects involving a broad range of College issues including academic planning and academic personnel administration.
Serves as College liaison to key campus office staff (Academic Personnel Office, other dean's offices, other UC campus departments) that oversee academic personnel administration. Represents the College in informal and formal complaint resolutions processes.
Dean's Office Administration:
Researches, analyzes and synthesizes information to prepare executive briefings, reports, presentations and summaries. Deals with both qualitative and quantitative information that may be complex in nature. Prepares confidential reports for senior staff and other officials. Handles the details of a variety of confidential and critical matters on behalf of the Dean, exercising knowledge, judgment and discretion.
Prepares responses to urgent campus requests on behalf of the Dean and other senior College administrators. Responds to inquiries from faculty, staff, students and the public regarding College operations, policies and procedures.
Drafts introductions of faculty and guest speakers for the dean at commencement, lectures, and seminars. Plans and organizes College-wide events in support of community-building and staff development. Organizes and staffs ad-hoc committees appointed by the Dean.
Supervises College receptionist.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
At least four years of experience working in academic personnel.
Advanced knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret systemwide, campus and College policies and procedures that govern academic personnel.
Strong skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, alumni/donors, students and external constituencies; both verbally and in writing.
Strong service orientation.
Strong skills in analysis and complex problem-solving.
Familiarity with campus processes, protocols and procedures. Knowledge of federal regulations such as FERPA.
Thorough knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Ability to use high-level discretion and political acumen and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Advanced knowledge of campus and College goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions.
Ability to analyze complex management issues, develop project scope and solutions, provide professional advice to senior officials, and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
Knowledge of trends in academia, especially in areas of academic planning, human resource management and administration, and immigration issues.
Demonstrated initiative, tact and planning skills.
Political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and political circumstances within all levels of the Campus as well as the Office of the President and external constituencies.
