Salary Range: Salary commensurate with background and experience of the individual selected. The College manages and administers a complex set of revenue and funding sources including: State General Funds of approximately $24 million, Academic Fees of $8 million, Endowments over $44 million, University Campus Programs funds over $8 million and Cal Poly Corporation funding of over $2 million.
The CENG Advancement Office is responsible for all aspects of external relations for the College including strategic planning for, and implementation of fundraising and communication programs designed to secure growing levels of private funding, in support of the CENG's strategic plan and in concert with the annual goals of the University's capital campaign. The CENG Advancement team serves and partners with the College's leadership, faculty and staff and works closely with the University Development division to achieve these goals. An important element of the CENG Advancement effort include outreach and engagement with alumni, friends, corporate partners, foundations, key volunteers, parents, media and community leaders
The Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations will serve as the lead professional in the college to cultivate and solicit alumni, parents, friends, employers, foundations and corporations for contributions. The incumbent will direct the implementation and coordination of a comprehensive college-based Advancement program by identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gifts; understand and comply with the policies, procedures and best practices established by University Development; foster successful major gift fundraising by preparing the Dean and other academic leaders to participate routinely and effectively in Advancement activities and prospect appointments; and participate in college based programs that identify and encourage relationships with donors, prospects and alumni.
The Assistant Dean of Development and External Relations reports directly to the Dean of the college and will work in collaboration with the University Development team under the joint direction of the Dean and the Associate Vice President for Development. This position is responsible for providing extensive strategic planning, articulation and implementation of college-wide advancement and development initiatives that have multiple year objectives, as well as coordinating capital campaigns that enhance and promote major fundraising and public relations efforts consistent with the mission and vision of the college. The incumbent will oversee a comprehensive and dynamic marketing program; represent the college at Advancement events; recruit, train, support and motivate volunteers; provide administrative oversight of all advancement processes; and perform the full range of supervisory duties for CENG Advancement and external relations staff.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor's degree and a minimum of eight years of professional experience, including a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in, advancement, sales, marketing, public relations or a related field. Demonstrated experience in advancement, major gifts fundraising, planned giving, or other related professional field is required, with preference for experience in a university setting.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS:
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising with the ability to align strategy and implementation with pre-approved goals and priorities.
Previous experience in capital campaigns, major gift cultivation and/or donor solicitation.
Demonstrated experience in developing and cultivating contacts within the advancement community.
Demonstrated ability to independently manage a large, complex, and successful program with annual and multi-year goals in a major long-term capital project campaign.
Exhibit a high-energy, collaborative, and productive working style.
Demonstrated experience in drafting complex proposals to individuals and fundraising communications.
Demonstrated ability to develop and executive a marketing and communications strategy including social media in support of advancement and other college goals
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Strong knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn to use prospect management systems.
Experience working with executives and/or volunteers in fundraising strategy Advancement and execution.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to utilize the alumni relations database as an organizational tool.
Demonstrated organizational and administrative leadership, and staff supervision skills.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Experience in record keeping, using principles of accounting, budgeting, etc.
Proven track record of closing major gifts (individuals, corporate, foundations, etc.) in excess of $1M and proven leadership on large Capital Campaigns.
Strategic thinker with the ability to think beyond obvious solutions for large fundraising challenges.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Experience in leading an Advancement Department within a College or leading a Central Advancement Office at a University or in a fundraising dept. of complex organization.
Advanced degree preferred.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn CENG and University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Ability to travel on a regular basis either locally or on overnight trips from one to five consecutive days, often several times per month.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

This position classification has been defined as 'Exempt' and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
