Since 1991, the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) has worked around the world to help communities, cities, industry, and NGOs accomplish their environmental, economic, and social goals. Across the world, there are businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, advocacy groups, factory managers, and individuals intent on changing things for the better. While they are generally best positioned to transform their communities, they often lack the skill and resources required to succeed. ISC matches local knowledge with international best practices to accelerate implementation and create locally-tailored, lasting, and equitable solutions. To increase ISC’s impact in advancing climate, sustainability and equitable solutions, Nonprofit HR has been exclusively retained to assist in the recruitment efforts for a new position, the Vice President for Development and Communications, reporting to the President and coordinating closely with the International and US Program teams in executing all responsibilities. The Vice President for Development and Communications (VP) is a key leader in advancing ISC’s mission and strategic direction. The VP develops and leads ISC’s efforts to enhance current and generate new programmatic and unrestricted funding. The VP will oversee and support the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, government, corporate, and foundation donors, and drive efforts to broaden the donor base and revenue streams.
Given the increasing urgency of the climate crisis, the Board of Directors has decided to double the size of the organization to increase its impact. The VP will lead this effort in partnership with the President, Board and senior staff. The VP will also oversee the development and implementation of ISC’s external branding, communications, messaging, and outreach strategies in support of ISC’s overall direction and expansion goals. We are looking for a senior development professional with demonstrated experience and contacts in a relevant field who shares our passion for addressing both climate change and injustice.
As a member of ISC’s Management Team, the VP has overall responsibility for leading and supporting ISC’s development and communications operations and staff. The VP is a strategic thinker and is responsible for developing a bold development plan and the fundraising strategies to achieve the plan in close coordination with the President, Board of Directors, Management team, program staff, and the development team. Further, s/he will set goals, monitor work, and evaluate results to ensure that departmental and organizational objectives are met and are in line with the needs and mission of the organization.
The VP ensures that the organization is well positioned in a rapidly evolving and competitive environment. The VP ensures that ISC strategies are clearly understood by all stakeholders and that the development office is achieving its strategic goals at an optimum pace with an increased knowledge and understanding of fundraising and business development best practices, as well as best-in-class systems and processes. In collaboration with the President and Program VPs, s/he identifies and leads new business development opportunities and ensures highly productive and positive relationships for the benefit of ISC. The VP serves as a chief fundraiser for the organization and successfully balances (at times) a rigorous travel schedule meeting with potential and current funders and the role of coach, mentor, and leader of the development and communications staff.
The ideal candidate will possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) with a minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience, including at least five years of executive-level fundraising experience with private foundations, corporations and major donors on a national and international scale. This role requires passion for ISC’s mission and goals, coupled with work experience and donor contacts in several of the following areas: clean energy, climate adaptation & resilience, equity & inclusion, environmental health, sustainable manufacturing, community development, and climate justice. The position requires a proven track record in fundraising from a variety of sources, including government agencies, private foundations, individuals, and the private sector. The person should be skilled at building relationships among and working effectively with diverse groups, and preferably have knowledge of and/or experience serving underrepresented communities, neighborhoods, and populations. It is essential that s/he possess excellent written and oral communication skills, with considerable experience in writing and presenting information to a variety of audiences, as well as a demonstrated ability to use data and CRM systems to set fundraising strategy and priorities, measure outcomes, and drive superior performance.
