The Grant Writer supports fundraising from corporations, foundations, and organizations for the Food Depository. Working closely with other members of the organization, the Grant Writer is critical to retaining and growing an important funding stream for the Food Depository by preparing and submitting grant proposals and funding reports. This opportunity would be ideal for someone who is interested in honing persuasive writing, critical thinking and project management skills in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that requires an evolving knowledge of the Food Depository’s broad range of programs and emerging work in the community. The Grant Writer has a tangible impact on the organization’s mission to end hunger, raising critical dollars that directly support programs. This is a particularly exciting and energizing time to join the organization in this role, as the organization is in the midst of a major strategic expansion and associated capital campaign.
Prepares grant proposals, reports and other pieces of writing for corporate, foundation and organization partners, under the direction of the Senior Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
Provides institutional donors with written program updates as appropriate.
Drafts tailored acknowledgement letters in a timely fashion.
Supports writing for other Development teams and select government grants (USDA, FEMA, and City of Chicago Community Development Block Grants) as appropriate
Provides support, information and background materials in preparation for donor meeting.
Coordinates a calendar of approximately 250 annual deadlines, including grant proposals, reports, and other documents and correspondence in accordance with donors’ guidelines and criteria.
Prepares complete submissions in adherence with deadlines, including narratives, budgets and other materials as requested by the donor and in partnership with other teams as needed.
Updates and maintains systematic electronic and hard copy donor files and attachments for grants.
Utilizes Raiser’s Edge database to record and track deadlines, relationship contacts, notes, correspondence or other details.
Routes grant agreements and acknowledgement letters for review and signatures.
Conducts research on prospective donors and opportunities, and finds supporting statistics for grant proposals.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Development/grant writing or similar persuasive writing experience preferred. Strong attention to grammar, adaptive writing style and ability to create tailored, strategic pieces of writing that meet varying donor needs.
Excellent communications, editing and writing skills. Ability to collaborate smoothly and effectively with staff across multiple organization departments to glean information and strategically position to donors.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, meeting all submission deadlines with quality work products.
Exceptional interpersonal skills, with ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and polish in managing internal relationships while meeting deadlines at a fast pace.
Strong project management skills. Ability to manage complete deadline packages from start to finish, coordinating all submission requirements.
Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills.
Proficiency with MS Office- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Raiser’s Edge or other CRM database experience a plus.
Writing sample required.
Evening and weekend hours may be required to support select fundraising events.
