This Fellowship includes a position as a Post Doctoral Teaching Fellow in Advocacy as well as the opportunity to earn a Masters of Law Degree in Lawyering (LLM). The Fellowship offers lawyers in good standing with at least one state bar association an opportunity to further learn the art of advocacy, learn to teach advocacy, and learn how to train others in these skills as well as in substantive areas of law. The Fellowship position will be vital in continuing to build a premier national advocacy program as well as granting the individual the opportunity to significantly enhance their own advocacy skills.
This Fellowship is created by the contribution creating the Douglass Stripp Chair in Advocacy occupied by the Dean's Distinguished Professor of Law, S. Rafe Foreman. Professor Foreman and Professor Michaelle Tobin work together as a team for the UMKC Advocacy Program. US News and World Report ranks UMKC as the #21 Advocacy Program in the nation. UMKC has serious aspirations of rising further in the rankings. In 2018, for the second year in a row, UMKC was one of only sixteen teams in the country to qualify for the National Board of Trial Advocacy's Tournament of Champions competition.
The teaching Fellowship duties include direct supervision of students in competitions, trial advocacy classes, Evidence, and other substantive courses upon request, as well as active participation in the Mastery of Advocacy course and other clinical opportunities, course planning, creation, development, preparation and instruction. The Fellowship duties also involve collegiality and cooperating with other faculty members in the Advocacy Center as well as assisting in bringing Advocacy to other departments upon request or need. Additional community duties include coordination of trial and appellate competitions and externships in the community as well as creation of excellent working relationships with the local bar and judiciary. The National Voir Dire Advocacy Competition was created here at UMKC and is a vital part of the program and presents significant additional opportunities for the Teaching Fellow.
This Fellowship is a contractual appointment for up to two years and includes tuition assistance toward the LLM. Masters of Law degree and opportunities for
Qualifications include: excellent speaking, leadership, organizational, and motivational skills; familiarity with law school advocacy teams, strong academic record and/or other indicia of high performance ability; a strong interest in teaching and an overall commitment to excellence and results as well as building reputation in the local and national communities. Admission to a state bar is required, and admission to the Missouri bar is preferred but not mandatory. Prior coaching experience is preferred.
Salary: up to $35,000 per year depending on experience plus tuition benefits for 15 hours of the LLM program. The position includes full benefits, including health insurance and CLE requirements.
