The Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) is Singapore’s national research institute for ophthalmic and vision research. It is the research arm of the Singapore National Eye Centre and affiliated to the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Duke-NUS Medical School.
SERI has over 200 research faculty and staff, and more than 100 adjunct faculty members in Singapore and internationally. SERI is one of the largest eye research institute in the Asia Pacific region, producing more than 3,000 peer-reviewed papers supported by more than S$200 million in competitive research grants.
SERI has developed a leading international reputation in broad-based basic, translational, clinical and epidemiological research for all major eye diseases, particularly those relevant to Asia, such as myopia, angle closure glaucoma, corneal diseases, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.
The Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) seeks a senior, high profile clinician-scientist or scientist to join us as Executive Director of SERI.
The Executive Director is the chief executive and will have overall leadership of the Institute which includes setting a strategic vision for the Institute; planning a comprehensive budget, attracting senior researchers and scientists to join the institute, leading and promoting research and research capabilities across Singapore and internationally; establishing impactful research projects and programmes to bring value based outcomes for patients, safeguarding overall governance and integrity of the Institute; identifying and implementing the necessary infrastructure to support the strategic priorities; and proactively increasing the visibility and broadening of research collaborations with national and international agencies.
The Executive Director will be equivalent to a Chair/tenured-Professor level appointment, with an outstanding internationally competitive track record as a clinician-scientist or scientist in ophthalmology, who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in managing complex teams and organizations, and possess an international reputation.
The candidate should ideally possess a MBBS/MD and specialist training in Ophthalmology, be able to practice clinically as an ophthalmologist in Singapore, and preferably possess a higher degree (PhD in a relevant science discipline), with at least 15 years of working experience in a research focused and/or healthcare organization(s) of which at least 10 years in progressive senior leadership roles. A PhD scientist with an exceptional track record in vision science and ophthalmology will also be eligible.
He/ she must be at an academic position of a tenured Professor position at a top ranked University.
He/ she must have a track record of significant ophthalmology research achievements at international levels, with demonstrated excellence in scientific outcomes, teaching and mentorship.
He/ she must have a demonstrated ability to secure peer reviewed competitive research funding.
The successful candidate will also possess an international reputation, has significant professional influence and strong partnerships and broad network connectivity with Academia, R&D communities, Collaborators and contacts in Asia and globally.
He/ she should preferably be familiar with the biomedical research landscape in Singapore, and its network of Singapore-based academic and research institutes with visionary and strategic leadership skills who can manage a complex organization, work effectively at the intersections of academia, research, and patient care. He/she exhibit exceptional leadership presence with a consistent orientation towards collaboration and partnership.
