The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) invites applications for the position of Director of Information Technology. Reporting directly to the Superintendent (President), the Director of Information Technology is responsible for the implementation of the strategic plan for information technology as well as the oversight of the operational management of the Information Technology Department. The position is also responsible for implementing management decisions deriving from the Institute’s short- and long-range strategic Information Technology initiatives and policy decisions; managing the Information Technology Department staff and operational budget in concert with Institute priorities; coordinating and preparing for review all appropriate State reporting requirements; and developing, coordinating, and maintaining the Information Technology Disaster Recovery Plan, Contingency Management Plan, Policy and Procedures Plan and other appropriate policy documents.
VMI is an undergraduate military college of engineering, liberal arts, and sciences located in a small, historic college town. It enrolls approximately 1,650 cadets, both men and women, and all cadets live on the VMI Post in barracks. Faculty, administrators, and cadets wear military uniforms and observe military customs and courtesies. A Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related field such as information technology, computer engineering or business is preferred. Successful candidates will also have experience in an academic or business environment with a demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives and manage a progressive Information Technology operation. The successful candidate will also have a broad-based working knowledge of technological issues in higher education and the industry including knowledge of basic networking and database management, application support, web technologies, networking service environment, network infrastructure, telecommunications and microcomputer end user support. Additionally, candidates must display the ability to interact effectively with varied internal and external constituencies and possess excellent strategic management, administrative, organizational and long-term planning skills.
Duties are expected to begin on 01 July 2019. Review of applications will begin on 17 April and will continue until position is filled.
