The Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life reports to the Director of Student Leadership and Involvement and is the primary staff person responsible for advising and engaging with members of the fraternity and sorority community which includes eight National Interfraternity Council (NIC), five National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), and twelve Intercultural Greek Council (IGC)/culturally-based fraternal organizations, along with three independent organizations. The Assistant Director also advises all governing councils and committees associated with the community.
Evening and weekend hours are to be expected. The Assistant Director must plan to live within 15-20 minutes driving distance of campus and will be included in Dean of Student Life on-call rotation as a secondary responder.
Essential Job Functions:
Supervision, Advising, and Training:
Attend all governing council meetings, meet regularly with all executive board members, lead all-organization presidents’ meetings once per month, and attend fraternity/sorority life events at regular intervals.
Advise students and organizations on University policy, organizational change, and goal setting for sustainable success and improvement.
Work with fraternity and sorority leaders to create and maintain a body of standards for fraternity and sororities.
Advise presidents of the governing council directly, including, but not limited to meeting once per week to assist in the setting of the agenda for the weekly meeting.
Meet bi-weekly with all council leadership (IFC, Panhellenic, IGC).
Advise council program officers to create community-wide initiatives.
Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate Graduate Assistant(s).
Share in the supervision of student workers and delegation of office projects.
Program Development and Implementation:
Facilitate the planning and presentation of programs to address high-risk behaviors such as hazing, alcohol and other drug use, as well as bystander training and sexual assault prevention programs.
Develop and implement workshops on risk prevention and event planning, which will be administered every semester to all fraternities and sororities.
Plan and implement large-scale programs for the fraternity/sorority community, including New Member Orientation, Greek Week, and an annual Awards and Recognition Banquet.
Establish resources and services for students involved in Intercultural Greek Council fraternities and sororities and support the growth of these groups on campus.
Based on benchmarking and needs assessment, work with fraternity and sorority leaders and the university community to identify opportunities for collaboration and create new programs and support structures.
Direct the implementation of a comprehensive, multi-day Leader Summit for community, council, and organization leaders.
Establish criteria for the organizational accreditation program, in conjunction with the SLI Director, to assure it is a fair assessment of organizational success.
Strategic Initiatives and Assessment:
Support the creation of a sustainable vision for Fraternity and Sorority Life that builds community and guides students to upholding a values-congruent mission.
Conduct comprehensive assessments of programs and services to ascertain achievement of learning outcomes as set by Fraternity and Sorority Life including CAP.
Assess campus community interests, needs, and resources, as well as national trends in fraternity and sorority life.
Establish resources and services for students involved in culturally-based fraternal organizations and support the growth of these groups on campus.
Work with fraternity and sorority leaders to create transition materials for council and organization leaders.
Create a framework for an Emerging Leaders/Ambassadors, peer-to-peer education, program to identify leaders and engage senior community members as trainers for community initiatives, particularly in the areas of community-wide new member education, harm reduction, and diversity and inclusion.
Re-establish the JHU chapter of Order of Omega and utilize this group to develop a leadership foundation and structure awards recognition for the community.
Serve on area-specific, divisional, and University-wide committees as needed.
Collaboration and Relationship Building:
Operate as an advocate for fraternity and sorority members by communicating community achievements.
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with fraternity and sorority community constituents including inter/national headquarters staff, local advisory leadership, faculty and staff advisors, the JHU Community Liaison, alumni, and parents to advance the mission and values of the fraternity and sorority community.
Collaborate with the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Student Conduct, and the JHU Community Liaison to ensure that all students understand the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of living in the university and surrounding communities.
Work with campus partners to share responsibility in harm reduction education.
Build a strong partnership with the Associate Director of Leadership Development and the Associate Director of Residential Life to ensure collaborative education is developed and provided for cross-sections of the student community, particularly as it relates to a shared leadership curriculum.
Communications, Web Technology, and Marketing:
Develop and implement a communication plans to serve new members, current affiliates, and parents/families which includes both web and hard copy publications such as newsletters, brochures, website, etc.
Report annually on the health of the fraternity and sorority community including but not limited to academic success, assessment of learning outcomes, fundraising and philanthropy efforts, and total membership.
Maintain accurate current records of chapter officers, members, chapter, and faculty advisor information.
Create regular community-wide communication regarding office and campus programming.
Maintain a marketing plan for use of social media platforms and office outreach.
Administer and facilitate the use of Hopkins Groups for event registration and organizational management.
Administer and facilitate the use of other technologies including but not limited to Blackboard, Student Information Systems, and Campus Director.
Other Duties as Assigned
Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Master’s degree, preferably in Student Personnel or Higher Education or related field is strongly preferred.
A minimum of three (3) years professional experience within Student Affairs is required.
Five (5) years or more professional experience within Student Affairs preferred.
Direct involvement and/or working experience with fraternity and sorority life required.
