The College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) at The Ohio State University is looking for a DoDVLS Front End Web Designer/Developer to support the Department of Defense Virtual Lab School team within the Department of Human Sciences.
The DoD Child Development Virtual Lab School (DoDVLS) project is seeking a mid to senior level candidate to serve as a UI Web Designer and Front-end Developer. This position would take moderate direction from the project's Design Director and work alongside our team of additional designers, developers, and childcare experts to fulfill a unified vision for our learning-management-system web products. Strong candidates would need to take direction well, while also having times of leading their own work and providing solid design thinking to explain proposed solutions. A strong candidate will have demonstrated work experience showcasing strong fundamentals of design, layout-design, UI-design, site-architecture, user-experience for desktop/mobile/responsive websites. Candidates should also have demonstrated front-end development skills and experience to coordinate with their design skills for creating web solutions that are user-friendly, efficient, extendable, and accessible templates utilizing HTML5, CSS3, bootstrap, flex, and other modern frameworks. A strong candidate would have understanding of accessibility from a design standpoint and how it is implemented in HTML via structure and semantics that incorporate the ARIA standards.
The DoDVLS Content and Training Coordinator reports to the Technical Director of the DoDVLS .The position is also an active team member and works alongside our team of additional designers, developers, and childcare experts. This position will work with child, family, and youth programs serving the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. This is an opportunity to build and maintain a training platform to better serve teachers, trainers, and program directors working in the military child-care system. This position will work from Bevis Hall on the university's West Campus.
In the first 60 to 90 days of employment, the successful candidate for this position will accomplish the following: -Develop a comprehensive understanding of college and university policies and procedures -Establish pivotal relationships within the DoDVLS client groups, college, and across the university's child development and research resource units -Develop an in-depth understanding of current DoDVLS content, implementation strategies, and website, as well as relevant research which supports the program A long-term goal of this role is to maintain the quality and relevance of the DoDVLS website to ensure an effective, current and research-based user experience.

About the Virtual Lab School
Created by experts at The Ohio State University, the Virtual Lab School (VLS) addresses a critical need for an easy to navigate online professional development and resource system that empowers professionals to build their knowledge and skills around research-based practices in child care and youth development. Supported by an extensive repository of professional development videos, research-based content, and relevant, interactive learning materials, the VLS simulates the enriching learning experiences found in university lab school settings.
The VLS system offers distinct tracks for center-based professionals including direct-care providers (infant/toddler, preschool, and school-age), training and curriculum specialists (coaches), and management personnel, as well as a track for home-based care providers who typically care for mixed- age groups. Anchored by 15 Core Content courses that include the 13 Functional Areas of the Child Development Associate competency standards used in early care settings around the world, the Core Content covers research-based developmentally appropriate practices for working with children from birth to age 12 across all the functional roles in child and youth care and education settings.
In addition to the Core Content, the VLS features a series of special topics and other resources that support the development of a highly trained and effective workforce.
The selected candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including:
Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
3-4 Years Professional UI Design and Development Experience
Design sensibility and aesthetic showcased in a strong portfolio of work.
Ability to work collaboratively by taking direction and also giving feedback/suggestions.
Solid demonstrated experience with HTML5 / CSS3
Cross-browser compatibility understanding
Comfortable using the Adobe Creative apps and related design/development apps
Desired requirements include
5+ Years Professional UI Design and Development Experience
Experience working within a drupal environment
Experience working in any CMS templating and theming
Understanding or experience building accessible 508/ADA compliant pages and templates using ARIA and other methodology.
Experience with user testing or design A/B testing
Experience with designing for web-printing
Familiarity with PHP in a production environment
Target Salary: $47,476.00 - $50,000.00 Annually
