Planning and Execution of Experiments – The independent execution of complex physiological and biochemical techniques is expected of this position. Specifically, the ability to conduct vascular catheterization under survival surgery. Some experiments require several days to completed such as West Blot, cell transfections, RNAase protection assay, etc. A thorough knowledge of the equipment used to perform chronic blood pressure and cardiac function is necessary. The ability to independently isolate difficulties in the assay and to correct them as well as the ability to modify the protocol to ameliorate results is essential. The individual must also be able to teach the techniques to postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. The data generated must then be subjected to a series of mathematical transformations and statistical test to arrive at a readily interpretable format i.e. tables, graphs, charts, etc. The technician is responsible for determining the appropriate tests and then to accurately execute them. The independent interpretation and planning of experiments is expected of this position. It is important that the technician be aware of the objectives grants through which the laboratory is being funded. Further, the technician should endeavor when possible to pursue new areas that could lead to additional funding and to acquire this knowledge through independent reading of journals and texts. Hence, the research specialist must be able to comprehend and apply others’ work to current efforts. Adoption of novel techniques is expected of this position along with conducting biochemical assays and cell culture studies.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Pharmacology consists of 11 full-time faculty members, 7 full-time Research Technicians, two full-time secretaries and thirteen graduate students. The department teaches Medical Pharmacology and Therapeutics to medical and graduate students and teaches Medical Pharmacology to the Physician Assistant students. A wide variety of specialized courses for graduate students are also taught. The educational objective of the department is to provide a sound basic foundation upon which medical students may build rational approaches to drug therapy regardless of the area of medical or surgical specialization. The graduate program through the Ph.D. in Pharmacology is broadly based to prepare students for careers in academics, research, government, industry and medicine.
In addition to their teaching duties, each of the faculty has a research laboratory and laboratory technician and performs research in his/her area of expertise. Faculty are expected to apply for grant support and to publish results of their research in professional journals.
