SUMMARY: This full-time confidential exempt position is responsible for leading the University-wide acquisition and governance program for Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) data. This position is responsible for working across teams to build a program that identifies and utilizes multiple data sources while also ensuring accuracy and timelines of data entry into the University system of record.
The Director will collaborate with managers in AA&D on the evaluation and improvement of business practices to optimize data accuracy and collection. This person will define and implement policies, processes and procedures for biographical records management.
This position is responsible for the development, implementation and on-going management of the University-wide AA&D Data Governance policies and executive committee.
The position requires a good command of leadership and team building skills, project management and operational expertise, and a good level of organization, professionalism and familiarity with the people and the objectives of Harvard Alumni Affairs and Development organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops and roll outs a data governance program that meets the goals of:
Facilitating data sharing across the University
Ensuring reasonable measures to protect data privacy
Ensuring the confidentiality of AA&D protected data
Managing compliance with University Security Policies and privacy laws
Chairs the AA&D Data Governance Committee.
Establishes and leads a data governance implementation roadmap.
Develops and executes a change management program including modifications to organization behavior, policies and standards, governance metrics, processes and data architecture.
Works with stakeholders across the University to generate alignment and compliance with the data governance program.
Develops and maintains policies and procedures that guide technical design standards for data infrastructure and applications to comply with the data governance program.
Establishes a repository for a data elements inventory. Documents this data governance framework: data policies, standards and practices.
Defines roles and responsibilities related to data governance and ensures clear accountability for stewardship of data assets.
Defines indicators of performance and quality metrics to ensure compliance with data related policies, standards, and processes. Provides progress reports to stakeholders.
Develops and oversees workflows for requests to acquire new data, access existing data, review business purposes of data, and purge data.
Creates strategic plans for data acquisition that incorporates goals from University-wide AA&D departments.
Creates policies and protocols to manage data from key University partners beyond AA&D, such as Harvard University IT.
Supervises assigned staff including recruitment, supervision, work assignment, learning and development, and performance evaluation.
Oversees AA&D compliance with privacy laws such as FERPA and EU GDPR.
Coordinates with stakeholders, the Office of General Council (OGC), Harvard Security Office, and Risk Management and Audit Services (RMAS) on compliance initiatives.
Develops and manages documentation and staff education programs that support compliance initiatives in collaboration with AA&D Education and Training team and other stakeholders.
Evaluates and implements technical solutions that support our compliance framework.

Graduate from an accredited college with a minimum seven (7) years' experience as an operational administrator with a successful track record as a leader, manager, and strategist in a complex organizational environment, university fundraising and administration or related transferable experience preferred. Ability to translate business issues into technical solutions. Excellent customer service skills. Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office desktop tools such as Word and Excel, FileMaker, SharePoint, Adobe; the ability to become proficient with the technology in use in AA&D. Familiarity with SQL and Qlik.
Ability to work in a fast paced, high volume environment. Experience working in an academic environment.
Communicates effectively with technical staff and non-technical staff.
Superb organizational skills. Must be motivated to learn and flexible to change. Ability to manage multiple tasks under competing deadlines and shifting priorities.
Must have strong written and verbal communication skills with experience writing functional requirements and an appreciation for structured development techniques in conjunction with software release management processes. Public speaking and presentation skills required.
Must be conscious of data security and risk management.
Able to work independently and as part of a team. Able to work effectively with internal and external constituencies in a University environment. Adept at evaluating problems accurately and displaying sound and confidential judgment. Must have an even disposition and be able to work effectively and politely with all people from all types of backgrounds and experience and in all types of situations.
